I know humping is a dominance thing rather than a sexual thing, but my boys seem to go through spurts of humpfests. Last night was a perfect example. Kaci, Snoopy and Mickey were all trying to hump each other – licking profusely – putting their necks over the back of the necks of each other… Snoopy was standing behind Sandy with his lipstick sticking out, doing the humping motion but not daring touch her… he did that in bed and was banging into me, which annoyed the crap out of me… lol
Is it normal for dogs to go through periods like this? They’re all pretty equal on the pack order I’d say… none are alpha or have alpha tendencies (except Mickey – he thinks he’s a little stud now)…lol What does it all mean? |

Not sure what it means (aside from dominance and horniness) but I noticed that Skipper was always humping Beacan when he was here....and Sorley. He isn't humping any of the girls now (he's the only boy in the house now).....but he does flirt with them.... |

| Jack does it a lot after my mothers dog comes out for a bit. She tends to be the dominant one, then Jeter, then Jack. So for like the next day Jack will try to hump EVERYTHING. Maybe something disrupted them enough that they feel they need to straighten out their order again? |

Sue, it's highly doubtful that all of your dogs are "pretty equal on the pack order". There is always a pecking order within a pack of dogs... sometimes we humans just haven't figured it out.
Dogs use these behaviors to establish their pecking order with the other dogs, and it’s usually best to “leave well enough alone", unless of course things get out of hand. When humans interfere by stopping their dog from interacting with other dogs in these ways, it can serve to exacerbate the situation, making the more dominant dog feel even more the need to assert his leadership. Mounting one another is another behavior that humans sometimes find offensive, but is natural for dogs. Since dogs are pack animals, they use shows of dominance or submission to establish the pecking order between themselves and others. It can be easier to let the dogs work things out on their own once you understand that the dogs do not intend to procreate (unless there is a female in heat, in which case, keep them separated!) and are not doing it for recreational reasons.
Of course, if your dog(s) does things to humans, such as greeting them at the door with an offensive sniff, mounting children or play biting with humans in ways that are far too rough, some obedience training will be required. While it’s fine to allow dogs to be dominant over their dog friends, it is not acceptable for your dog to consider himself dominant over the humans in the household. Doesn't sound like that's the case in your household though. :+)
Humping is usually about dominance but not always. It can be a way that certain dogs play... but most often it's about dominance.

I didn't interfere, I watched with curiosity lol They were over on the couch and I was on the loveseat watching TV... I only interfere when the licking gets out of hand... Kaci/Snoopy will lick each other for hours if I let them sometimes... but like I said.. it goes in spurts... any idea why? I know this may sound stupid, but could it be weather related? The change in seasons maybe?
I guess what I meant to say is that I believe Snoopy and Kaci are on the bottom of the pack. I know Sandy is alpha and Ben is next in line. Snoopy and Kaci are pretty laid back. Prince isn't much into the other dogs and he hasn't humped or try to hump anything... but Mickey's really come out of his shell and is a HECK raiser now! LOL |

| I don't know what it means Sue. None of mine did that until Zip came and I soon stopped it all with a water bottle. Neither Ratty nor Cutter even tries now that Zip has gone to his forever home. |

Sometimes situations such as what you describe can escalate into "fightfests". LOL
That's why it's wise to always supervise situations such as these.
Canine behavior is a deep subject. No way can we know why every dog does everything he/she does, when so much is contingent on outside factors such as environments, pecking orders, training, etc. |

Thanks, Nora!! You're awesome... it was actually amusing to watch, cuz Mickey would jump off and on the couch while doing it, and it almost seemed like play, but I knew it wasn't... he's just a little instigator lol This was definitely a time I wish I had the video rolling... |

hey sue... you can always have my situation....
bryson lays belly up.... squirms his head btwn braeli's legs... and begin to lick her "intimate" area...
braeli gets excited and stands up and vogorously humps his face walking down his body!... if
she stops she will sometimes lilck and nibble on his PP too... which then he will hump back... ultimately ending up in a "69"...
strange... and funny! dominance? play? fun? feels good state? who knows?!?!? |

I think nora is a degenerate perv trying to romance other female dogs. And no--the spaying did not stop her amores quests ) She enjoys going after my leg a bit to much as well--it is funny casue she is so pottymouth cute--but I know she needs to start being polite. i got some really revolting pics of her on top!!! |
