So we had a REALLY good end of the week and weekend with Daisy's house training. She stayed in her crate without using the bathroom in it for TWO days!! Then over the weekend, no nighttime messes in the house, and the only little peeing incidents were our fault for not paying attention as much as we should've. But I was feeling very optimistic, especially when she went to the back door last night ON HER OWN to go outside.
Well, that optimism crashed this morning. She'd pooped in the middle of the night, then again this morning while I was in the bathroom AFTER she'd gone outside. So it looks like we're back to square one. I'm at work now, and she's in her crate...I go home in a couple of hours to let her out, and I'd be willing to bet any amount of cash she'll have pooped in the crate...

| She will get there. Sounds like she has the idea, just not fully there yet. Is the crate small enough or is she able to poop on one side and stay on the other? Keep up the good work and consistancy and she'll learn. What is her eating schedule like? Did she eat before or after she went out before you crated her this morning? Jeter used to go 2 times in the morning too, befor and after he ate. That has finally stopped! lol |

Trixy is crate trained too. I had to learn her little ways, when it came to pooping, potty was ok. The pooping thing though! So, this is what Trixy does. In the morning I take her out she will go potty. I bring her back in, she will eat her breakfast. about 5 mins later after I have made my coffee and sit down to start work (I work from home). She will start whining to go back outside and then she will poop. I have tried feeding her first and then taking her out, nope that didn't work. She has a routine. |

I feed once a day and find it better when it comes to housebreaking... that way, while I'm at work during the day, they've already emptied their insides in the morning before I leave, and since they don't eat til I get home, there's less chance of them needing to potty during the day.
Hang in there!! |

Your pup is not that old either, they are like children when it comes to potty training. I agree don't get discouraged, they tend to regress, too. It sounds like she got the thought in her head to let someone know she needs to go. I went through this thing with Trix, and sometimes she still pulls it on my because I am home all day. That she was constantly crying at the door. I would take her out because she whined, and she wouldn't do anything. Sometimes this would happen half the morning. I just wanted to say, whatever, you don't need to go! then, I would think well maybe she does and she would get me everytime! now, We read each other alot better, I can tell the difference in her whine and actions. Which is another thing, try to find a certain thing that she does right before she goes, like circling, sniffing alot just anything a spot she typically goes to the bathroom in, Trixy's spot was my daughters front door! Isn't that lovely. To this day when I see her going over there I jump up, lol! Just think positive and give positive reinforcements and KEEP a routine no matter what!!! she will get it |

I get up, take her outside, then feed her in the morning at about 6 a.m. or 6:30 a.m., then she plays while I work out (generally without incident other than this morning). I take her out when I leave for work at 7 or 7:30, and she'll pee but never poops. I can't get home 'til 9 am, and she generally poops in the crate while I'm gone (she never pees though). The crate IS too big, but I can't find anything that'll safely make it smaller...I tried cardboard but she ate through it. Still getting the husband to work on that for me. But she'll go pee again when I go home for lunch at 11, then she generally poops at 1 pm. Sometimes we're good the rest of the afternoon, but usually not. I've thought about feeding her just once a day, in the evening, but would that be bad for her at this age? |

the feeding part is different for me. i keep trix food bowl out all day, she is a nibbler. but I am home pretty much all day too, so i can watch her. maybe this morning was just a little mess up. if she is generally waiting until after your work out, and you like that routine, keep it. she will learn that she needs to go after your work out. i have always read and been told, feed and take out and let them poop. with my experience, which isn't a whole lot, dogs that i have had, have never pooped right after they ate. also, how old is your pup? usually, it is an hour for each month old the, like if she is 4 months, it's generally every 4 hours. when they are asleep it is about 2 hours (like at night). the main thing is a routine. it will work it self out. also, trix makes mistakes in the house still, she is only 8 months old. they are not very often. I don't spank her, or rub her nose in it, she knows when she messes up. I just say trixy, no in a lower tone voice and her tail goes between her lags for a while, and then she is ok. I clean it and move on. |

| Nora has the before and after morning poop thing as well--I also tried to fool her by feeding her before we go out, but she will poop outside and then again in the house if I do not take her out twice! |

| Ps--It really does take time for some of us--Nora is 8 months (i can't belive it)! and it has taken us till now to know what she is up to--and if we deviate, she will still go in the house--so it really does take time patience and routine, at least for us |

I guess my first question would be... why was she left loose in the house at night? Was she not confined either in a crate or in a specific area? If not... she should have been. I would advise purchasing a smaller crate.. they aren't that expensive, and for training purposes, I would not purchase the wire crate I would get the a hard plastic pet kennel. Depending on her age... I would go to feeding once a day .. in the evening. Few trainers (in fact none that I know of) advise free freeding (leaving food down all the time). But many people prefer to do this although I don't recommend it. Dogs have very short digestive systems so what goes in must come out fairly quickly. I don't ever feed a dog and then leave them for the day without making sure they've done their business first... whatever that takes. Don't come in until she has done her business. Take her out on a 25-30 foot long line to allow her some freedom, and yet allow you to maintain control. Consistency is the key. A small crate... minimal feeding before you leave for work... making SURE she goes before you come back into the house.... and a stable routine will all work towards helping you be successful with potty training. |

That is is really good too!!!! Trixy is just a nibbler, but, when I take her to the beach, I make sure that she has eaten and has pooped before we leave and I bring my poop bags just in case. treats worked really well for her too, when she would go potty or poop I would praise and then, give her a piece of a treat. I have a friend who just got a 10 week old boxer, we baby sat for 3 long days. they are not crate training and it was horrible!!! she pooped all over my laundry room, my laudry room was the cleanest for 3 days, lol! scrubbing and mopping the floors. trix made a few mistakes in her kennel too, but, it was not nearly as much and as hard to clean up. |
