Sammy has developed a bad habit if jumping on the table and cleaning it of all crumbs. (Even when there is no food on the table, and it has bene wiped clean- she keeps getting reinforces so intermittantly that the behavior is worth persisting in). I have tried sticky tape- blocking off the dining room, a spray bottle, a supersoaker (yes....a supersoaker..), and a time out immediatly after she gets on the table.

Any suggestions? It seems like such a simple fix- but she has so many ways to make the ideas turn into her favor. She is a little over a year old now, and has had an obedience class in. She is in her own room when I am at work or when my housemate has her- hanging out with him. I talked with him about the issue, and he says that he also puts her in time out when she gets on the table.

Help!?

every dog needs exercise and discipline. if they aren't getting either of those.... you have problems. everything in your home is yours. you need to show Sammy that. if he wants up on the couch, he needs to be invited. if he wants to go to bed you need to tell him its okay to jump up there and snuggle with you.

i have 2 rabbits who have their own room. we have a 7 month old rat terrier/chihuahua mix that is not allowed to go in there(not that he'd hurt them) and when i go in to clean or feed them, he sits at the door.

this may take some time, but here is how i got my puppy, Ratchet to learn his boundaries:
when he took a step into the room i made a noise (i use "shh" like Caesar Millan) and backed him out of the room.
wait until he sits before you turn your back on him.
everytime he made a new attempt i made the noise and pushed him farther back. never letting him cross the threshold into the room.
if he barks or whines, he is protesting your command. but don't back down. it's working. he is starting to understand that that is your territory.

if you see Sammy jump up on the table, remove him and get between him and the table.
like i said, this may take a while to work, especially if he is used to having the whole house to himself.
when you try to use tape or water or whatever to block him from getting up there, he doesn't see that as you not wanting him to get up there. he sees a new challenge.
claim your territory!
good luck!

Thanks. I'll keep up what I'm doing. Her freedom has already been restricted the more that I have been thinking about this- the more ideas I now have. She sleeps in a kennel, and is contained to a room during the day. We have mini training sessions and long downstays as well. We'll keep it up!

Hate to be so simplistic but PUSH THE CHAIRS IN! Button was bad about this until I insisted all humans (including visistors) push their chair in when done. Your dog can't get up there if the chairs are pushed in. At age 4, she sooooo know she can't get up there that she doesn't even do so when Lance or I occasionally forget to push our chair in and she has actually noticed it! Is there a name for that kind of conditioning, Nora? LOL

I have literally watched her push on the chair legs so she can scamble up. Believe me, we've been consistent about that!  She is quite a character- and I am quickly learning that training a rattie is different than a german shepard.

I had a very similiar problem with Brutus the cat terrier about a month ago!!  Except it wasn't with the table, it was with my counter tops!!  I heard a crash the one day and went to investigate only to find a butter dish upside down on my kitchen floor.  I look up and could not believe my eyes when I saw a dog on my kitchen counter.  He would jump up on the bar stool then from there onto the counter.  I had to literally move the chairs as far away from the counter as possible.  My kitchen looked a little ridiculous for about a week with these chairs in the middle of nowhere.  I gradually put them back and he hasn't done it since.

How is she getting on the table? Does she jump on a chair and then up on the table? If so.... keep the chairs either pushed up under the table or totally away from the table. Unless it's a low table, it's highly doubtful that she will jump straight up on the table unless she has a chair to help her.

Now having said this... my rat terrier can jump on the table from the floor without using a chair. Yours may be able to also... but most of them can't.

She certainly can. I have posted a note on the table for my house-mates to see that says to clear ALL food and dishes off the table after they are finished and push the chairs in. I am doing an experiment and all the chairs stay in the wall, and you just take what you need and put them back when done- but she already found the link if chairs and jumped from about 3 feet from the chair to the table. I think she really is part cat- and I need to get her into some agility soon! Once we have our obedience finished and solid we can start in the formal agility class!
