A little history for those that don't know.  Mitzy lost an eye from an attack by a larger dog when she was a tiny puppy.  So she's been very scared of big dog most of her life but getting better as time goes on....I've been careful to get her around very sweet big dogs whenever I can.

Today we walked past the huge, old lab that wanders around downtown...she didn't even flinch.  Good but we'd seen him before so not a huge surprise.

Then a big American bull dog out with his owner on a bike ride came running towards us!  All the wee ones were scared but not paniced (well, Alfy wasn't scared).  The Am. bull dog was young and just wanted to play and be friends.  His owner hung out with us for a while.  I petted the bull dog and eventually everyone sniffed and "made friends" including Mitzy Voss!!!  Now, she didn't run up to him wagging her tail but she stood and sniffed noses with him and didn't growl, or get hackles or back up.  (In the past she would have totally panicked and been pulling back on the leash to get away).  So she did good and made a new BIG friend!  Even little Skipper who growled twice at the big guy, stopped when I spoke to him.

Yay for Mitzy!! Glad she did better with the big dog. Bailey still gets scared around other dogs, big or small but worse with the big ones but she's doing better too.

That's quite a pack you've got there and quite a pack leader they have.

I can't even describe how proud I was of her when I watched her look up at this BIG guy sniffing her and she didn't even flinch.  My fear has always been that when she growls at the big dogs it will provoke them to attack her but she was so good with him.  And he was such a sweet dog, too, very submissive to his owner, me and even Skipper which helped a lot.  He was just a big goofball.

Isn't it funny how proud we can be of these little fur creatures. Guy and I were talking last night about the first time we took Fred lure coursing. We actually cried when he finished we were bursting with pride!! Mitzy sure is a good girl, your pack is so well socialized. You should be proud of them .

The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too

Great success story MB. My Roxy has a similar history (without the loss of an eye thankfully) with a big golden retriever that used to terrorize our previous neighborhood. She's gotten better with many large breeds but a golden will still make her hackles go up.

p.s. which foster is in your avatar? I can't read the fine print.

Mary Beth... I know how hard and how long you've worked on this one issue with Mitzy, so I also know this is a HUGE step for her! Made me smile when I read this. Keep up the good work lady! And give Mitzy a big hug from me, ok?
