Looking forward to  the cold wisconsin winters we have ahead in a few months.....

How do you exercise your dogs? WIth such thin fur I afraid that she'll get too cold. (even with a sweater on). Throwing a ball around the house will not be enough for her- she needs to run full out every day. I can start working with her on booties- but I already know that that will be a challenge- the ice they put down on the sidewalks can be pretty rough on dog paws.

Looking for some creative ideas if you have them too. I don't have access to a treadmill- I figured training her on that would work as well. I would rather have a relaxed rattie than Sammy in a box.

Thanks ahead of time!

I guess if you're worried about their feet you could use those little doggie booties?

Sorry I don't have any suggestions. However I have the same concerns. I live in Maine. This is Duke's first winter and we're wondering the same. My husband and I were just talking about that. So again thanks for the question.

We don't get much cold weather in Florida so I'm no help to you. Good luck, I hope you can think of something.

Jumping around in the snow would be good exercise. And yes, they need coats on in the winter. Don't know about the ice but I guess it would be hard on their little feeters.

I'm glad I live where it doesn't get so cold! My shorties do ok without exercise every day but some of the foster I've had get really antsy if they miss even a day of walking.

They sell like forty dollar booties for hiking and sledding dogs to protect their feet from the elements.... but they also sell like a five dollar pack at walmart with four booties that are "disposible". But they look tough enough to go through several uses to me. They're plastic. You could first put on little baby socks and then the little disposible ones for insulatin if you wanted. It'd all probably be less than ten. And I would think that would last you one winter. With that and sweaters, you'd probably be good.

I don't really have to worry about that because at most we have 3 days with snow/ice on the ground a year (not counting frost). But I do want to take Sophie hiking and so have thought about cheap versions of those doggie hiking boots.

I live in Oregon and although we don't get real cold or any snow speak of, we get lots of rain and yes, ratties do like to be covered up if its cold and/or wet out. (unless of course yours likes the water! One of mine does, one doesn't)

Do you have stairs in your home? When it's really nasty out, I throw the ball down the stairs as many times as my girls will run and fetch it. I know when they're done because their tongues are hangin' out of their mouths and they are so tired they plop themselves down on the floor! Trust me- it as much- if not more exercise than running full out somewhere.

I saw your other thread- with a Pic from a hike in Portland- where was that taken? I live in Portland!

Playing ball on the steps, Rattie 500 hot laps around the dining room table, playing hide and seek, chase around the house, take a ride to Petsmart or Petco, the local animal shelter here has small dog socials in the winter where they play inside. Hope winter goes fast this year!

You can go to PetSmart and walk around.

In the winter is when we do a lot of our training. Tricks, basic commands or just shaping exercises with the clicker. I have found a tired mind leaves a tired dog........

I must be blessed with very mellow dogs.......... (knock on wood)........... although in the summer we're outside as much as possible, in the winter, they don't like the cold/snow very much (upstate NY).  But there are times when they get a little cabin fever, and I throw them all outside..........

We have a fairly large yard. In winter hubby plows a path around the fence line perimeter and the dogs all run the circle. Occasionally someone gets cold feet but usually that is when they are our sniffing and taking too long to do what they need to do, not on the rattie runs around the path. They also play inside (fetch down the hallway). I tried booties but they were not a big hit. I bet our Foster boy, Georgie will want booties if he is still here. He likes sweaters and other fashion items.

Hello fellow Wisconsinite.  I have two and they loveto play in the snow when it is not below 0.  they do wear jackets, sweaters and fleeces.  I also have boots for them and when it is really cold they leave them on.   Walks are less outside becasue of the cold so we go to Petsmart and Petco alot.  Also we have a bathtub that is the right size for a wading pool that they play in and after that they do the Rattie 500.  Also there is a Doggie Daycare by us that has an "open gym" on Thursday evenings that we can go to for a small fee.

I am originally from Portland, Oregon! I am here in Beloit through the winter and will probably return to Portland this spring sometime. I'm teaching first graders- very much like working with a rat terrier....... Anyways, the photo was taken on one of the many gorge hikes we took this summer- I can't remember the name of it for the life of me. I'll look back and find out !

Here's a link to an video that I posted on here  of Bailey exercising in the winter.  lol

We don't usually get this much of snow so we usually just exercise in the house running after tennis balls.

I am in Georgia and even when we had a light dusting of snow the dogs just loved it! We have mild winters so just bundling up for the humans for a walk is cool or playin around in the back yard does us fine. Oh and not to forget the indoor rattie runs.

Rocky and I get our exercise in bad weather by chasing each other up and down the hallway, its only short, maybe 25ft, but you get a good workout going back and forth!

Living in Central Florida, when it is not raining, they can usually go out in the backyard, and run around. We don't get much snow...

We have stairs in our house and I would sit at the top and throw the ball down and he would chase it. He loved it and it always tuckered him out.

I use Musher's Secret on Henry's feet for protecting them when we WalkyDog on the streets, but it's actually designed for sled dogs in the snow. It protects the pads from getting snow up in between the pads. Boots didn't work out for us too well. They came right off his feet.

We are lucky here in Georgia in that the winter is the best time to get out and exercise. It was tough this summer, though.

I live in Wisconsin..  funny thing is, my Taylor loves the snow, and doesn't get cold if he's got his jacket on.  He climbs to the top of the highest snow bank he can find, and leaves presents for mommy up there that she can't go pick up, if you know what I mean...

I have put booties on him if he's gonna be outside for any length of time, and I've found that the easiest/best way to do it is to have yourself ready to walk out the door, and the pup ready with all but the booties (coat, lead, etc...)  Then put the booties on, get excited, and make a mad dash out the door!  They get excited and forget that you just put booties on them, and usually they'll settle into a walk, even with booties on, in a few minutes.

I have the middle of the line petsmart booties for Tay.  They were like 20(ish)? bucks, but well worth it for the times Tay and I played in the snow or took walks any longer than about 10 minutes.

Pet stores, as already suggested, and indoor training, as suggested, are also very valid options, provided wherever you live plows the streets well enough that you can MAKE IT to the store.

Will be interesting to see how my new little one likes (or hates) the snow.  Maybe she and Taylor can do the ratty 500 at my dad's house in the snow!

Good luck with your pup this winter!  I'll let you know if I think of any other ideas, since this will be only my second ratty winter (Taylor and I were in Vegas his first winter, cause I was still in the military.)
