HI! I am new to this site, I have two puppies, a 6 month old Toy Fox Terrier named Digby and a 4 month old Rat Terrier name Daphne. I originally only wanted one dog, then he was in an accident when I was out of town and broke both his front legs so I bought Daphne to keep him company when he was in his casts... Digby is now potty trained for the second time, Daphne I have only had her since April and working on it but oh so stubborn. I have a condo with a patio and a 1200 sq foot office when I take the dogs to work with me, I have trained them or am training them to go on peepee pads. They are both crate trained and sleep in crates or in the kitchen at night. I put 3 pads together in the kitchen and Daphe will will only peepee on the pads, she poops wherever she wants to. During the day when they are running around they house she will almost always peepee on the pads but has never once pooped on them, same with the office, she always poops in the other room in front of the copy machine.
I don't know what to do. My boyfriend has put her nose in it and told her no, then put it on the pad and said good girl. we give treats if she goes peepee on the pads... please help me, I hate having to put her in her crate when she is in trouble for pooping on the carpet. |

Do NOT put her nose in it !! I consider it a poor way to train a dog by pushing their nose in the poop. It often frightens them more than trains them. Personally I don't use this method. When we get puppies they are similar to human babies so would you rub your babie's nose in feces? I know of very few dogs who will poop and pee in the same location (on the same pad). Not saying it can't happen... just saying it's highly unlikely that it will. Put a piddle pad in front of the copier where Daphne obviously prefers to do #2, since you say she "always poops in the other room in front of the copy machine". This alone should tell you that this is where she prefers to go... so why not put a pad there for her? It seems you wish to piddle pad train your dogs rather than train them to do their business outside. That's certainly your choice... but don't expect them to do #1 and #2 on the same pad. |

I don't have a backyard to take them out in, I live in a condo, and my office is on a very busy street and has no yard either. I figure pads would be the best and then when I do take them outside they can go there too. My Toy Fox poops and pees in the same location or rotates the pads. I have them everywhere in the house.
I am thinking maybe of getting a covered kitty litter thing and put the pad in there, maybe she prefers privacy. I have no idea. And I don't rub her nose in it, my boyfriend does.
THough most people I talk to say to rub their nose in it I don't. |

My Sassy has been trained to pads from the beginning... she also poops and pee's on different pads... My adopted Rattie is a different story tho, she is not housebroken and I work 10 hour days... Right now my carpet smells bad... Punkin was raised outside I think.. she does not use the pads... I have a 3 day weekend and I am going to work on Punkin... Good luck And Welcome!!! |

No offense, but I highly doubt these people know too much about training dogs. I don't know any dog trainers who would advise rubbing a dog's nose in it's poop as a method of potty training.
Piddle pad training a dog because of the environment you live in is absolutely fine... it's a simple matter of preference combined with your surroundings. If you don't have a backyard or other appropriate outside area... piddle pad training is obviously better for you. However, it didn't sound to me like you had a piddle pad in front of the copier, where your little dog has chosen for her "spot", so I still would put one there. If you have a dog that pees & poops on the same pad.. you're one of the lucky ones, because honestly? I only know of a few dogs that do. So for now I would proceed based on the assumption that she's wanting to do #1 on one pad and #2 on another. If she's using a pad for #1, you've got half the *battle* won! Besides... if I'm gonna clean up something, I'd rather it be #2 !
Good luck to you...

| I just wanted to add that ratties are very smart. When I got Mitzy I first tried to housetrain her the way I had my larger dogs....when she would pee inside I would take her to it and say "no" firmly and take her outside. Problem was, with her anyway, she got the idea peeing WHERE I COULD FIND IT was bad...so she would go behind the couch to pee! Positive reinforcement when she would go outside and lots of consistency and patience were what it took with her. |

 Attention Starved

| I am just starting to be able to trust Jack 100 percent now and he is almost 7 months old. Constant supervision to prevent these accidents, keeping him on a long leash if need be, was what was needed to solidify our training. He knew what I wanted but didn't always get it right. I think until a dog is 6-7 months you are still bound to have some "accidents". Rubbing their nose in it is just going to cause more issues IMO. A long leash on Jack made it so I knew where he was all the time and could stop him if he started to go. When I couldn't watch him fully, he was in his crate. Good Luck! |

NIbbler is peepee pad trained. We live in an apartment and he cannot go to work with me, so we kept a baby gat up in the bathroom with his crate, bed pillow and food in there. And we covered the bathroom floor ENTIRELY in Newspaper. Once he got used to peeing on something other than floor we added three or four peepee pads. He finally started to pee on them but pooped on the newspaper. So we then started to remove the newspaper section by section. with the last section being where he did his poo. He started peeing on 3 of the pads one time, and pooping on the last one. we waited a week, and then we removed one of his pee pads. after another week we removed another one. Then we just left two, one for pee, and the other for poop. 3 ometimes he'll even pee and poop on the same pad. When he is not in the bathroom, apparently training him this way has worked because we keep one pad in the living room and one in the bedroom. He will go out of his way to use the pads. We've only had one set back: When he would pee or poo and we weren't paying attention to him we'd be like Noooo bad dog! Then we realized that maybe that was his way of getting our attention. So now, if we are too busy to play with him while at home, and he goes potty on the floor, we just clean it up and don't say anything or even look at him. That has really helped, now he goes on the pad when we aren't paying attention, but when he goes on the pad we praise him a lot. We can now even take the pads to other people's houses and he will go on them. Sorry this post was so long. I guess to make it short and sweet, you need to progress with them. And another big thing I would say is don't rub her nose in it, or even freak out and say NOOO really loud. If she goes on the floor, just tell her bad dog in a calm voice, and clean it up and don't give her any extra attention after she does. However, when she goes on the pads, praise her give her a treat, love on her and everything. Make it a big deal and she'll learn that she's happy when you're happy, and you're happy when she goes on the pad. Good luck! |
