of a good training treat for a 7wk old puppy.  I used milkbones for my other dogs, but I dont know if those are very good.  I want to give him treats that are good for him.  When he goes potty I praise him alot and tell him goodboy, but I havent been giving him any treats for doing it and I really think food would be a great motivator for pottying outside.  Our back door is not right by our living room where we usually are and he cant make it to the door right now alone without having an accident so I carry him outside everytime he wakes up and needs to go.  I want him to get right away that this is what I want so I thought a good treat would help with that.  Soon he will be able to get to the back door by himself right now he's a little clumsy and cant get there fast enough.

I got these great Wellness Pure reward chicken and lamb jerky treats they are great nothing nasty in them but Ivy loves them also Bil Jac little jacs are nice tiny treats but they do have high fructose corn syrup in them so I don't give Ivy too many of them I really like the jerky treats best they have chicken lamb dried chicory root whey sea salt lecithin garlic and mixed tocopherols and you can break them up into little pieces.

I just realized Im in the training forum with this question.....I should have gone to health and diet. Sorry!!! LOL

I don't use commercial treats. I use stringed cheese, itsy bitsy bits of chicken hot dogs, or itsy bitsy bites of cooked chicken.

I use string cheese and Nature's Recipe Training treats. The treats are only available at petsmart tho. They are just the right size for a puppy. String cheese is good, but she's learned to recognize it, so I can't eat any without giving her some, too. (On trade, of course)

I'd avoid the "got-to-crunch-it-up" treats and stick with soft one-bite treats (cheese, chicken, or hot dog bits). That way their focus is not broken to "stop and chew" and you can go right on to the nest training task. In other words, you don't want the rewarding to become a distraction to the training itself.

Ollie seems to really like the Nature's Recipe and I have been giving him those since he was 6 weeks, they are small. just one little bite.

I don't know if this is really healthy or not, but I use tiny squares of home-made whole-wheat waffles as treats! My doggies love them!

Tuesday is waffle night at our house and when they see the waffle maker come out of the cabinet they can barely contain themselves. The recipe is: 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour, 1/2 tsp. salt, 2 tsp baking powder, 1/2 cup canola oil, 3/4 cup milk, 2 eggs. Beat the liquids together, add to the dry, cook in the waffle iron until crispy. This makes enough waffles for 1 meal for 1 hungry human and more than a week's worth of treats for 4 treat-crazy dogs. (When the waffles are cool I cut them into squares that are a little bigger than one of the little waffle squares.

We call them "woofle bites"!

I have been told to buy treats with the first ingrdients being meat.  I gave my trix softer meaty treats as well.  I also used her food, just because I didn't want her to get used to just giving her treats for potty training and other tricks we taught her, didn't want her to fill up on them and not eat the good food.  when you give the food like it is a treat, that is what they think it is, because i was handing her the food, she took it like she would a treat. i also, broke up the treats that I Would give her into little peices, she she would only get a taste.
