I am just curious how much time in a day that you devoted to bond with your rattie. I work all day and my time to spend with Daxter is only a little bit in the morning and after I get home at night and weekends.
I just want to be able to bond more with him, right now he just being affectionate with me when he gets up in the morning and when I get home, after that he just hang out in his bed and sleeps. I just want to encourage him to be more playful with me when I am home and needs advice on how to encourage him to do so and being comfortable around me.
What kind of game do you usually plays with your rattie. Daxter loves treats, that's the only time that he will hang out with me, but when he realize he doesn't get any, he just walk out on me.
Thanks! |

I also work during the day most of the time, so my ratties are alone alot and get to hang out with me at night and the weekends. I've had CoCo since she was eight weeks old, and one thing we always do is play fetch in the house. I sit at one end of the halway and throw her toys to her and she runs and gets them and brings them back. Then another thing I do almost every day with CoCo is to do basic training with her, and its just time with her and I and I get all o fher attention. Now Gus has been with us for about four months, and he is overall a more cuddly dog. So everyday, we both curl in the recliner and I rub his belly for about 20 minutes. Angus still gets in trouble if he sleeps with us all night, so every morning about a half hour before I start moving, i go get Angus and let him cuddle with me until we both have to get up. Also, mine are apartmetn dogs, so when we go out to potty everyday, we go for a run, and I find it really helps them bond with me. |

I'm gone for about 10 hours a day during the week at work.... so I get up about 7:00 and bond with the babies for an hour or so.... get home around 6:00 and bond with them all night. ALL of them also sleep with me, so I guess that's bonding time, also.
Weekends, I rarely go anywhere, unless it's work or Ratbone related, so I can spend those 2 days with my babies........

LOL - I'm about the same as Sue now...gone for 10 hours...before work and after work it's all stuff. Weekends unless I'm out at the stable I'm doing something with the dogs. I try to get all of them out on several walks each day on weekends (with 6 I have to do this in shifts.) I don't give many treats other than bully sticks a couple of times per week. Bonding is when I play with them or hold them on my lap or walk them...or sleep with them (Mitzy, Mayfly and Skipper). I make sure to spend enough time with my own babies since I've got 2 fosters, too. Luckily hubby is usually busy fishing or working on a project around the house! |

| I work all day (M-F) and my girls and I also only get early mornings, evenings and weekends to bond as well. I think they get plenty of time with me, and it sounds like Daxter is with you as well, so maybe you just need to include a few new activities to do together is all? Fetch, walks, tricks, training, couch time, what ever it might be. We play lots of ball (fetch) in our house. We also do training, some tricks go for LOTS and LOTS of walks!! |

I work 9-6 also and I have the "short" hours of our house as Guy leaves at 6am and gets home after 7pm. I get up around 7am and the first thing we do is go for a walk at least 30 min usually more, I feed them and get ready and then I have a half hour so I watch TV and they just hang out. On real nice mornings we go outside for the extra half hour. When I get home from work we walk again at least 1/2 hour again. We train some nights, some nights we don't. When I cook they hang out and then afer dinner is playtime. Guy or me gets their stuffed animals out and we PLAY!! That usually gets them running around the house like crazy!! About 8:30-9:00 we lay to watch tv and sometimes they keep playing sometimes they come to get belly rubs! Good luck, I think spend as much time as you can walking, playing or just keeping Daxter interested. |

I forgot I get to go home for lunch so I force them outside from 2:10-2:40 to get some air, otherwise they would just sit in the house with me!! |

Thanks for sharing everyone, it's nice to hear how you guys spend time to bond with your ratties. I know Daxter loves belly rub and there is one stuff animal that is his favorite that we play fetch with - well more of me throwing that and he run to get it and bring it back to his bed and play with it and ignoring me, LOL I guess I have to find something that is more interactive and interesting to play together. |

Val, I take him for a walk twice a day actually around my neighborhood, about 20 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes after I get home. He actually get about almost 2 hours walk each day, I have a dog walker come midday to walk him and take him out to pee. On the weekend we go to the dog park and I let him run loose and he loves it. Here is the funny thing, in the dog park when I said Daxter "come" he will come running to me, but at home when I said "come" he just look at me. I think he needs more training and I am being lazy lately. I am thinking to put him in obidience class, still researching which one is the best one. |

This would be Sally's bonding time schedule! She is very vocal (as in making little whines, yips, etc) about her playtime and if she doesn't think she's getting enough attention, she gets right in your face about it.
I get up with my daddy around 5:30. He takes me outside and then I hightails it back to bed with Momma and do the squirming/wiggly thing all over the bed until I have my head on Momma's pillow and then I wash Momma's face. Now that Momma is awake...we have cuddle/play/tummyrub time for about 40 minutes. Momma gets up and then we run around the house like a crazy dog bringing all our toys to Momma. Daddy chases me around the living room trying to get my kong (I don't really care if he gets it, I just like him to chase me) and when he gets it, Momma puts NUMMMIES in it. But there's just one thing...I can't have it until just before Momma and Daddy leave . When Momma & Daddy come home, I go outside to play frisbee with Daddy, then inside to have my dinner. Then Momma takes me for my walk. Or should I say I take Momma for a drag race around and around and around. Once we get home, I talk and talk and talk until someone continues to play with me until I'm all tired out, then I cuddle up next to Momma and go to sleep.

Pepper is crated at night and while i'm at work. I really don't think it's fair to her, so she comes for cuddles in the morning. She lays in my bed while i get ready, then back in her kennel all day. then I get home, and it's off to the dog park. She checks in with me every few minutes. I try to change positions while she's distracted, just to teach her she can enjoy herself, but she's gotta keep an eye on me. if she loses me for a minute and i see her looking, i'll call her, and even without a treat, she will come full throttle. i wait till she tells me it's time to go, usually about 60-90 minutes, then we come home for dinner. I cook, she begs. she finally eats her food when i eat mine, then she plays while i use the computer. then she usually conks out around 8, so i turn the tv on and let her sleep in my lap for a bit before bed. she's got me all to herself on the weekends. She's got a lot of independent time, but i'll take the little things like potty time for training. i'll just take treats with me, and have her heel around the grass, or even off leash sometimes. she doesn't know when mommy's gonna bust out a couple treats, so she knows to keep an eye out. |

| Pixel is exactly the same way, outside off leash, come and she bolts as fast as she can to me. Inside yea she acts like she doesnt know what it means. Pixel is alone all day as well but she does sleep in the bed with us now (spoiled rotten) and we have either been going for a 40+ minute walk or going to the dog park everyday. Actually last night our walk was longer because we stopped at a park on the way back from the walk and no one was around so we let her off leash and played fetch with her. When she seemed tired we put her back on leash and finished the walk. On weekends well we spend a lot of time. I even take her to dinner with us because I feel like she is crated all day I dont want to crate her when I go to eat. There are a few places in town that allow her on the patio (and love her to death). We do occassionally go out to eat without her but its like maybe once a month. |
