Moose is still a puppy, about 5 months, and I am having a hard time driving with him. I have tried driving with him inside the kennel, but I eventually give in to some of the whining and let him out. But he refuses to sit in the passengers seat, instead he insists on sitting in my lap, and he doesn't squirm, just wants to lay.
I know that this is unsafe, and when we are driving further than a few minutes away I bite my tougne and put him in the crate. I know they make some sort of doggie seatbelts, but I don't know where to look for them. I know an accident can happen at any time, and I don't want to put Moose in harms way.
Any advice would be so greatly appreciated.

Yes... it iS unsafe to drive with a dog in your lap. If ou don't wish to crate him... purchase a doggie seat where you can put a halter on him and at least secure him to your car seatbelt. Better to be safe than sorry!

We bought seat belts at fleet farm. Sydney has a car seat that she sits in with her seat beat so she can see out the window better. Some vet offices even sell seat belts and harnesses |

Thank you for the webiste...and for not being mean...I was a little nervous to post about this because I know I should be doing something to protect him. I am going to go out a purchase a seat belt harness today or tomorrow because we need to take a trip next weekend!

Hey, I use to let my cock-a-poo Copper sit on my side when we drove which could have caused problems and if we had been in an accident would have been fatal for him. When we got Sydney I started her right in the back. |

Pepper has the zip line from www.kurgo.com It's great because she can move around and check everything out, but she's harnessed safely in the back. The harness and lead can be hooked directly to a seat belt, so it's multi purpose. It's the same price as the ones that only go on a seatbelt, too.

my girls are a little too big for most dog car seats...they are just beyond the weight limit. I use a lambs wool padded harness that you hook onto the seatbelt. don't put off getting the harness or car seat like I did...Molly was with me when I got in a car accident and flew up from the back seat and hit the dashboard, and while she ended up being okay, it stressed both of us and I felt so guilty (not to mention like a horrible rattie mom) for putting her at risk like I did. I now make sure that they are buckled in before taking them for a car ride.

Don't feel bad about posting when you are asking for assistance. Amos grew so rapidly that I rarely took him out in the car except to the vets. When he was tiny it wasn't a problem, but by the time he was going in for his last shots it was a major ordeal. I remember the last time that I took him in by myself. He started out in the back seat. Then he leaped over the seat into the front seat(while I was driving). I had a fly swatter and was using it to keep him out of my lap. I finally threw a box of tissues into the back seat and he leaped back there and happily shredded them all the rest of the way home. I said NEVER again! I never took him off alone again. Now I have an SUV and a dog gate that keeps him safely secured in the back. When we went to TN, we put his crate in the back. It worked just fine.

There is something called a Sherpa bag--it is not cheap, but nora loves being in it. It is used when pets travel on planes and all other things. Very soft inside and the bags are nice looking

You've been given excellent advice already. I always travel with my girls in a crate. Button and Zipper are actually more comfortable in the crate. Plus I don't want my dogs to ever become a "flying projectile" inside my car (or even worse, being thrown out a window) if we're ever involved in a wreck. Recently on another forum someone's rattie was standing in a window and was thrown out the window when she slammed on her brakes. Dog wasn't seriously hurt, but sure coulda been.

I just got a catalog yesterday that had something in it. It was a seat that fit between the driver & passenger seats, so it would be next to the driver and up so the pup could see. I thought it was a little pricey, but it's worth checking out if you have a vehicle with a center console. They had several types to choose from. Their website is www.inthecompanyofdogs.com Maybe you can find something you like there.

Our Walmart has seats and restraints in the pet deptpartment, we were looking at them yesterday. I'm also guilty, we took a run to the corner station (0.6 mile) this morning and all Cameo wanted was to be in my lap. Fortunately, this is a very easy going area with very little traffic most of the time One can even drive 30mph in a 40 zone without being run off the road (as happens in Miami, so glad we're out of there).

I'm curious, do you have to buckle them in the backseat? I realize it is safer, but I have two boys in car seats back there and the only place for her would be in the middle of them, but there isn't a shoulder belt there.

Bailey's carseat is strapped in by the seatbelt, and his harness fastens to the seatbelt also. If we are traveling long distances, I always crate him... but if we're just going a short distance away, I just let him ride in the carseat. The harness is made to fasten to the car seatbelt... and so is the carseat. I keep it in the back seat.
