At the suggestion of my trainer.... I purchased the book "When Pigs Fly - Training Success With Impossible Dogs".  I just finished reading it last night, and I would highly recommend you purchase it and read it also.

It's a book on operant training methods... many of the methods totally different from how I was taught to train a dog.  It's not necessarily a book for beginners... it's more at the intermediate level.  Goes into detail about clicker training... very interesting and the author is wonderful.

If you own a sheltie, the book is not for you!  haha (velcro dogs).  The book is more for individuals who own terriers or dogs in the hound group.... which are more independent thinkers and "doers".

As intelligent as Bailey is (the rat terrier breed in general is highly intelligent).... he's his "own dog" sometimes, and definitely does have the typical, independent, terrier personality.  The author explains why you want to start out with shaping rather than just luring your dog into a behavior, and how to get your dog(s) to do work with you rather than do their own thing.
Anyways... just thought I'd mention this to you... and anyone else here who might be interested.

thanks Nora,

I was looking for a new book and this would be perfect!! The interview I was supposed to have last Saturday got cancelled as the man's wife went to the hospital with apendicitis. Not sure how long I should wait to call him, as I have not heard from him yet. I am so anxious to get me feet wet in the training world!!

The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too
