Fred has discovered he really likes to dig lately.  I am finding holes in the backyard and I busted him a couple days ago. He is walked, trained, exercised and played with so I don't think it's boredom. Guy is going to crap when he sees all the holes. Is this something new as he has never done this before and how do I discourage him??

The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too

Bring a squirt bottle outside with you.  Make sure it's set on stream, not spray.  When you catch him, nail him with it.  If he continues, keep nailing him.  I find a squirt bottle is my best defense against  unwanted behavior!!  It's a great tool!!

I will have to find one. I hope you know who doesn't pick up on it. When I mowed yesterday I started seeing them all. I am going to have to keep Guy confined to the house and not let him outside! My Fred, I wonder if there are moles, I seen something dead in the yard too. looked like a mole.

Years ago I had Dalmatians that liked to dig. My trainer at the time told me to bury some of their poop in the holes if they were returning to the same spots over and over again. It worked for the dals.

Thanks for reminding me!  I need to buy pineapple today during my lunch hour .  Gonna feed it to the babies to see if that will stop them eating poo!!

I saw an episode on the british trainer show about the dog that likes to dig all over the yard and destroyed the garden. She suggested to provide a sand box and bury his toy in there. So when Fred is in the mood for digging direct him to the sand box, that way he just dig on the place that he allowed too. It was a repeat episode last Saturday in the am.

The sandbox sounds like a good idea, unless, of course there ARE moles in the yard. Don't know how you'll stop a JRT from digging if he's hearing moles down there.

First you must determine why the dog is digging. Some reasons include boredom, hunting, separation anxiety etc... Often digging is a symptom of another problem. Terriers do hunt by digging, so this may be more of a genetic/hunting behavior for your dog.
you can fill the holes with their poop and pine cones or lava rocks. The lava rocks and pine cones do not feel good on their feet the poop tends to repulse them as well. Another option is to bury chicken wire 1-2 inches beneath the surface of where they are digging inappropriately. This basically prevents them from digging any deeper and it also does not feel good. A digging pit is a good idea, especially for terriers who are genetically wired to dig. You can mark off an area that has fairly soft soil, and bury treats, toys etc.. in that area to encourage the dog to dig there. If you catch the dog digging in the wrong spot, interrupt them with a loud clap or "eh eh" and lead them over to the appropriate digging spot. Another thing I have heard is to never let the dog see you digging in the yard. They will tend to think it is OK if they see you doing it. Same goes for filling in the holes. Don't let them see you do it.

I had a dog who dug for moles.  The only solution to this was to get rid of the moles.  Until those little buggers are gone, your dog will go crazy trying to get them!  Be careful what you use though.  No poisons or anything that could end up hurting the pup!

I lived in a house that had moles. The sandbox did actually help. That is, until the moles got close to the surface and you could actually see the ground moving. That got her attention.

I started to wonder if my old trainer was nuts (though the poop thing DID work, by the way).  I did some searching and found this link which has lots of really great info I think on digging dogs:
