To the tune of Reunited!
Okay, so after reading all of your input about the prong in the other thread, I decided to try going to the park and walking with Henry prong-free to see if he had learned anything.
HENRY DID GREAT!!! I am so proud! He only pulled a couple of times, and I was a tree. Yep. I did "be a tree," and it worked. That 3 months so long ago of work and frustration did do some good after all. He does walk ahead of me, but I noticed that he turns a looks at me a lot to see where I am.
Henry pretty much looked at me on cue with all joggers, cyclists, strollers, and walkers. With the other dog walkers, I got off the path to get some distance between us, but then he pretty much ignored the other dogs. Having hot dog bits helped tremendously. I even stopped to have a conversation with a park friend, and she had her dog. Henry did great. He kept focused on me (and my hot dog bits) the whole time except for one slip when he tried to run over to the dog. I said his name and he came running right back to my side. COOL!
At one point a fire truck with sirens blasting went by while we were in the section of park that's closest to the road. Henry looked right up at me without me giving the "look" command (he does this when dogs bark, too--we pass a lot of dogs barking behind fences when we walk in the neighborhood, and I've taught him to look at me).
I am so excited! I will probably not try this with skates on anytime soon, however. Skating is a whole different ball game.
