I have heard something about teaching dogs to ring a bell when they need to go potty? Has anyone else dont this with thier fur baby? Chloe doesnt reall give me clear cut signs that she needs to go potty, so we go outside all the time! lol We live in an apartment so its not really that convinient for me........but what could be more clear cut than a bell? Any comments? Suggestions?

Thanks!

Some people here have done that. I did that. Problem was after Bailey learned to ring the bell, he was ringing it all the TIME! And I couldn't tell if he really needed to go out or if he just WANTED to go out. He was controlling it -- not me. It drove me nuts .. so I put the bell up! haha

Nora, I have a friend on another list that said that's what happened to her, too. Ratties are so smart they soon learn to ring the bell for every bird and squirrel they see! LOL Makes potty training "challenging", shall we say.

i plan on using a bell, i think it would be very handy, and i dought there will be that many squirells and brids that my pup can see, and if thye she wants to go outside for something then i can take her out. it is such a cool idea and i am excited to try it out i say if you want to do it go for it. i would incorporate a word like outside or potty along with the bell, so if you are at a different house or decide not to use the bellanymore, then there is something else they associate with going to the bathroom, if that makes sence? I did teach mine to use the bell. We have similar problems with them ringing it every time they want to go outside, but I still find it effective.

Pepper rings a bell to go out. She will sometimes ring it for other things, like to go for a walk, or to go in the car if she wants to go with us. But the trick I've used is that I listen for her to drink water. If I know she's been drinking a lot, it's usually legit. She has gotten better because I make her potty if she rings it. Even if it's before a walk. She has had her bell taken away a few times though. When I know she has just come back in and wants to see who's in the hallway, for example. She's kinda learning her own ways of telling me now, but she's a year old.

LOL thanks for the replys everyone! Chloe will probably figure out that she can ring it for anythang but I think it may be worth it if I make her potty every time she rings it before she comes back in. Does anybody actually know how to do the training for this though? I have no clue how to teach her to actually ring the bell!

Simple concept- hang a small bell from the door handle low enough for your pup to reach and ring the bell each time you take her out to go potty.  If you can, use her paw.  They will ring the bell A LOT at first - the trick is to go out every time anyway.  I used this for my 1st rattie and she was potty trained in a week!  I took the bell off the door because it was annoying every time you closed thedoor.  Now she goes to the door and if I don't notice she will come whine at me then go back to the door.  Have fun!

Ditto that.  We trained our min pin to do this (only it took more than a year to get him sort of house trained - he was a spite pooper).  He rang the bells on the door, even the morning he died in the fire   He also ate the macaroni and cheese that Jason had left out on the coffee table that morning, LOL.

It really did work well, though.  I thought about doing it with Pix, but its SO obvious when she's got to go.  Jason can't spot them, but they're pretty clear.  Her booty kind of pooches out if she's got to go #2 and if she's got to go #1, she spins circles, and jumps and snaps at your hands or just stands at the front door pawing and whining.

I love the bell!!  I say go for it!

I need to add that we never put the bell on the door.  We hung it beside the door so the crazy thing wouldn't ring everytime one of us touched the door.
