As you are aware I just got adopted by three female Ratties. The girls were not trained to do anything and have NEVER been on a leash. While Sally will be trained by my son- the twins still need to be trained. Now mind you they are about a year old and are just learning to sit, down and will come to their names, they have not mastered stay or any other command. So when is it time to leash train them? They have collars and tags now and have tolerated them but, often stratch at them. HELP .....................................

I appreciate any advice you have on training them.

If they have NEVER had a leash on them, then NOW is the time to start training!
You might start out by just clipping a short leash to the collar and letting each dog walk around with the leash attached inside the house where you can keep your eye on what's happening, just to become familiar with it being there.  Nothing worse than just hooking a leash onto a dog that has no idea what that thing is and trying to drag it around by the leash while it's protesting!

There are others here who can offer advice in this area, also.  I started Lucy out with a leash as soon as we got her---when she was 7 weeks old.

yup, leash training can't start too soon. unless you like having sore shoulders. The short leash works great, keep the collar high on the head so they can't get any purchase to use their considerable strength. Good luck!

Do they really love us or are we just walking food dispensers?

What are your thoughts on a halter instead of using their collar? Is that not safer for them? Thank you for your advice. I could see me now (in a wheel chair) trying to drag two unwilling dogs on a leash to the vets....
