We have been working with Fuji on his training. Needless to say he is very smart like most ratties. However, I have realized that he is a lot smarter than what I gave him credit for. He has decided that he will not follow my commands unless he gets a snack. He perfectly understands what sit is, but will not put his bottom down until he sees the treat in my hand. I will ask him to sit and he will look at me then at my hand. If I have a treat, his bottom will go down immediately. However, if I do not have a treat in my hand, he will look back at me and make a face. It is almost as if he is telling me  "I am not doing anything for free sweetie. Where is the treat?"  He will do the same thing when we ask him to go in the crate. If he sees me put the treat in the crate, he will go right in. If not, he will wait right outside the crate until the treat is put down. Any suggestions? How can I get him to do some simple obedience without the treats?

I would try to not rely on treats, but reward Fuji with something else he likes. Is he fond of a particular toy? If so... use it for the purpose of reinforcing commands.

You might also try using the toy one time and a treat the next. Eventually, as the commands become engrained... you won't need anything at all .. !!

Yes.. these dogs are highly intelligent and quick to catch on.

Thanks, Nora. I will start alternating the treat with his favorite toy, a rubber turtle.

Not that I'm an expert...but maybe clicker training would work? Or you could have him sit, then go over and get the treat, instead of having it in hand the whole time?
