I have been meaning to teach her some basic commands for awhile now but with 3 skin kiddos running me ragged, well you know. So tonight I was determined to try some. I started out with bits of kibble for reward. We did down. That took some work! I had just seen that british trainer on Animal Planet last night have the dog go under her leg to get the dog to go down the first couple times. That FINALLY gave her the idea of what I wanted. Phew! Okay, then I was able to just motion with my hand and say DOWN and she went down for the treat. We also did up to get her back to a sit before going back down. She must have thought Mommy had gone crazy! Up, down, up, down, up, down. Then we tried shake. She really doesn't like me touching her paws so she may not get this one but I'll keeo trying. Oh yeah, and by this point I had moved onto cheese. OOoooooo......CHEESE! Big motivator! The command she followed the best, and THIS SHOCKED me, was leave it. She really left it. She walked away! Couldn't believe it. She would walk about 2 or 3 feet away and look away from the cheese until I said go ahead. We just kept going on these commands until that 1 slice of cheese was gone. So is it okay to do so many commands in one session? How long do I use cheese before I expect her to do the commands w/o a reward? |

| Great job Yaz & Amy. I still use treats occasionally just for reinforcement. But When my dogs understand the command and can do it 10 out of 10 times I quit treating each time. My "kids' are easy, they are almost as happy getting a good girl/boy and an extra pet, than a treat. They learn to do what I ask to please me and not for the treat. Yaz will get it. Look how far you got in 1 session! As for how much to teach in one session I was taught if they are working good and getting it, introduce new commands, If they seem confused end session as below. If they are haveing a bad day, work on their best commands and ALWAYS end a training session on a good note-Ask them to do something you know they will do, treat, praise and end session. |

Thanks Cat. I also forgot to mention that "up" was a difficult command on account of her being lazy. She wanted to stay "down". She really seems as though she could not care less about anything but the cheese. Should I do this every night? |

| Yep, however if you are going to train every nite keep the sessions short 10-15 minutes and make sure to keep them upbeat and fun. Also as you are treating Yaz tell her what a GOOD GIRL she is and ruffel her head. Then she will come to expect the praise as well as the treat and it won't be so hard to work her without treats. Does she know her sit command? Do you ever ask her to Jump/get up on something, like get up on the bed? If you use the up word for anything else that might confuse her, I use sit even from down. |

OOOOHHHHHHH.....okay. Never thought of that. Yeah we say "up" all the time! Der. Blonde moment. She does know sit. She learned that way, way back. She sits before I even command it. So from "down" say "sit" to get her back up? That makes sense. I figured we would just keep the training sessions as long as 1 cheese slice. I did give her really excited "good girls" but she was just like " Lady....CHEESE!" We'll see how it goes. |

Yea, tell her sit and use you hand signal for sit, or make a like come here with you hand, and move back a little. You ARE using hand signals with your voice commands, right? |

| So long as you use the same hands signals for the same commands, and anyone else who gives her commands uses the same, then they are right. There are like universal hand signals, but that don't make them right for you & Yaz! |

Bringing a dog under your leg works very well with dogs who don't respond well do the more traditional way of teaching the "down" command. I have actually had to bring a dog up between my legs before.. and that works too! Always incorporate a verbal command with a hand signal in the beginning. As time passes and the dog becomes more responsive to the command, you can do away with the verbal command and just go with the hand signal if that's what you wish to do.... this of course, is something you'll have to decide. I'm thrilled you are working with your furkid! I know having three youngsters in the household translates into less training time, but if you can somehow fit in 5-10 minutes a day... that's all it takes! Good job !! |

| Down. once she is down tell her show me you belly. Turn her over on her back and Yea good good treat. Once she gets this down.. then comand show me your belly then tell her roll ove and roll her over yea good girl treat! Keep at it untill she gets it. Now you have taught her 2 tricks. If you teach her roll over 1st its hard to do the show me your belly trick I don't know why. Good progress. I been waiting for an update. Can you imagine how much she would know if you did it EVERY NITE!!!! She sounds like she likes your "schooling" or maybe just the cheese part. Sound like each interaction is pleasurable for you both.. YEA YAZ!!! YEA AMY!! YOU GO GIRLS!!!! |

Daddy needs to have the kibble and use the same words and hand signals. It won't take as long for her to work for him, because she already knows what is expected, and each time it will get easier. Amy you are doing a great job!! And your baby does work for food. I promise she will get to the point where she will do it just for you. As for roll over she'll catch on, shes smart and during school she gets YOUR attention, keep it fun for you both. My baby cries and crie when she is left at home by herself. It breaks my heart but sometime it is unavoidable. Do you crate Yaz when you leave? What is her behavior when you leave? Give us a little more info. Amy you and Yaz are doing great and each moment you spend in school strenghtens you bond and gives you both more confidence. keep it up GIRLS!!!! |
