Hey everyone!!  I have a question to shoot out there.  My little Minnie is 8 weeks old and has recently started to bark.  I have noticed she doesn't do it often and usually only when she wants to play.  I don't want her to become a barker though.  When playing is one thing but I couldn't handle it if it was constant.  I want to try to start teaching her now not to bark, at least not often.  My question is does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this?  My mom said to get a pop can and put a few small rocks in it and tape the end and shake it at her and tell her "no bark" but I don't know if this would actually work.  Any ideas?

Whenever she barks or whines, put your hand gently around her muzzle and say "quiet" or "no bark". As soon as she stops, release and praise with a yummy treat. (I prefer real food treats such as itsy bitsy bites of stringed cheese or chicken or hotdogs). Soon, you should just be able to say "quiet" (or "no bark") and she will be quiet. When crating Minnie as part of her housebreaking, and at night, use an empty soda can with some coins in it, and the opening taped up. As soon as Minnie whines, loudly shake the can. Don't say anything, the noise will startle her into being quiet. Most dogs pick up the idea very quickly... especially if you begin this when the pup is young like Minnie is.

The goal to success here is persistence. Allow Minnie to bark sometimes (like you said she barks when she wants to play) and you're going to have trouble. Correct EVERY time she makes noise and you've got a good chance. Starting this at a young age is a huge plus.
