I'll be getting a pup in the fall when i get my new pet-friendly apartment (so i have some time ), but i work from 6am-2:30pm and would love some tips on potty training!
i was originally thinking of doing the doggy litter box thing, but i'd rather have her go outside if possible. how would i be able to train her to do so if i'm gone to work? any ideas would be much appreciated! |

http://www.rat-terrier.com/Home/tabid/37/forumid/5/postid/210365/view/topic/Default.aspx this is a thread with TONS of great info on potty training....hope its helpful! We tried the litterbox thing with Toa cause thats how he learned at his foster home, he did well with it but then started digging up the litter...LOL...kinda messy...we got rid of it real quick! |

yeah, that's what i was thinking might happen with the litter too i read that post, but i don't think i can take her outside very often since i'll be at work lol everything else was very helpful though i was wondering about maybe teaching her to use paper or something while i'm gone, and outside when i'm home, but that might be confusing for a pup... wouldn't it? but it'd probably be better than nothing lol |

she'll probably be about 8-12 weeks (so a puppy puppy lol) i work from 6am to 2:30 pm with a half hour lunch but it takes about 15 minutes to walk to where i work, so i wouldn't have any time to actually eat if i went home my boyfriend takes classes which varies so sometimes he'll be home to watch her, but sometimes he won't. any ideas for the times that she's alone? |

I would strongly suggest crate training her in general...for potty training reason and other reasons. Training her to get used to a crate from the time you bring her home will give her a safe place to call her own. It will also give her a place to be while no one is home that keeps her safe from getting into anything that may hurt her and also will keep youre furniture, clothing etc safe. heres the problem, a young puppy, as a general rule, can only "hold it" one hour for every month old. a 8 week old puppy can hold it for approx 2 hours, a 12 week old puppy, maybe 3 hours. I guess my suggestion would be to get a little older puppy...so that they can be crated for longer...but for sure you will to rework your schedule while she is new to you and getting used to the crate...even if that means eating a sandwich while your walking home?!? i dunno what else to recommend...many people use puppy pads and they work for them, i guess you could baby gate her in the kitchen "puppy proofed of course" and put puppy pads in the kitchen to see how that works.....? hope this is helpful! |

yeah, i think crate training is a good idea I think i'll pen her in the kitchen or something with puppy pads for while i'm gone, take her out for lunch, and work with her when i'm home. Thanks for all of the great advice! also, when she's an adult, do i keep her in the crate, pen her still (will she jump out?), or let her have the house to herself (when i know i can trust her lol) |

i keep both mine in crates, separately while we arent home. Many members on here keep them out in the house and many keep them crated....there is also a very informative post on this topic as well. lemme find it. I think the crate is a really great tool to utilize. Imagine if you have people over who arent comfortable with dogs or a situation where a dog should be crated like while youre painting or something....also if you want to take her in the car, a crate is a pretty safe way to go and if shes already sed to it, it will be much easier to use it in these situations! |

| I have potty trained many dogs in my life I have found that a wire crate with the pull out tray works great!dont get one to big though most of the time they will not potty where thet have to sleep. Also be sure to walk her or him before leaving for work. Also its best not to leave food in the create with them as you know what goes in must come out.with ratty being small dogs she needs to eat before you leave and then give her about 15-30mins. then go out to potty give it time and it will work out. good luck nik scooters mom |

Follow the instructions on the pinned topic House Training Your Dog atop this forum for when you are home. Also read the excellent advice on Crate Training also pinned atop this forum for times you are at work or humans can't be there. If you are both consistent with the training tips in these two topics, you should be successful with potty training. Good Luck and let us know how it's going! |
