We've had several different breed of terriers before we got Murphy, and I'm very impressed with how smart Rat Terriers are!

I know it's not a textbook command, but I've been using the command SETTLE when I want him to lay next to me.  It's pretty funny, because Murphy treats it like a play dead command.  I say SETTLE, and even if he's crazy excited, he comes next to me and just collapses.

That's cool! Some dogs just do things naturally we can take advantage of. Makes it nice, huh?

I would LOVE to teach this. Did you do anything like shaping, or just teaching it when he did it naturally?

Murphy is a pleaser, so if he gets immediate praise for something, he seems to catch on pretty quickly and wants to do it, and that is all I did to teach him this trick. I had to coerce him on a training lead for the first two days, but after that he just got it and does it almost every time now.

It's the stuff he gets into when no one is immediately around that I have trouble with - chewing and house-breaking. If I can't catch him in the act, it's really hard to correct him. I've been keeping him on his lead and that has helped a lot with it.

Keeping him on a lead so that you can immediately correct inappropriate behavior is key. Are you crate training him? I highly recommend it, as it obviously comes in very handy for those times when you are not home or otherwise too occupied to keep a close eye on your dog and it's difficult to have him leashed to you (i.e.: taking a shower! )
