My rattie is having some issues with getting up at night and peeing in one certain spot on the carpet.  He's done this several times, so I've begun to shut the door to that room tight and then he'll go in the bathroom and pee on the floor in there.  At least that's easier to clean up, it's linoleum, but still.

He's 5.5 years old, we adopted him almost one year ago.  He is neutered and for the most part, does really well with potty issues.  I always take in outside right before bedtime and walk him around the yard.  He doesn't pee in the house every night, but I'm not sure why he does it.  If he has to go potty in the middle of the night, he's not trying to wake us up, just leaving the bedroom and going wherever.

He is crated during the day while we're at work, so I don't want to put him in a crate at night, that doesn't seem fair.  I have been trying to get him to eat his dinner a little bit earlier at night, but he doesn't usually like to eat until my husband gets home at almost 8:00.  Seems like he feels the household is complete when we're both home, so then he can eat and be at ease.

If he's trying to tell me something, I can't figure it out.  Any ideas?

Thanks,

Pam

My first inclination would be to tell you to crate the dog at night. I believe the majority of trainers would tell you to do this. BUT... I think crating a dog all day and all night is too much (my opinion), so I don't do it with my four dogs.

So if you feel as I do... then I would suggest purchasing some "piddle pads" down in the bathroom where he keeps going back to. At least this way he'll learn to empty himself on the pad, hopefully, over time.

I have a doxie who is now 8 years old and has seldom made it through the night without having to 'go' during the night. So I started putting a piddle pad down, and now every night she gets off the bed and uses it... and I help her back up into the bed. Yeah... it's hassle. But it's the price I pay for wanting her with me at nighttime.

He has too much freedom. It sounds like this is only at night. Barring a bladder infection I would do this:

1) make sure he is EMPTY before bed (have him potty a couple of times. I send the Peanut back out 2 or 3 times and he will pee each time I direct him to)
2) pick up water 2 hours before bed time
3) FEED him sooner. If you change his schedule he will adjust. Sure, he might have one hungry night but he will not have two. Put down his food at whatever time you choose (like 6pm) and pick it up 20 minutes max later. I promise the next night he won't quibble about when to eat. Hunger is an amazing motivator.
4) restrict his movement. Either leash him to you on a pillow by the bed (or in the bed if he sleeps with you) or keep him in the bathroom or crate him.
5) if you don't want to do these things get some belly bands.

OH and you have to use an enzymatic cleaner to get the smell out of the spot he keeps going or he will never stop.

Thanks Nora and Gwacie, I'll try some of your suggestions. I have been trying to restrict his water as the night goes on, but he gives me that sad face and I'm a sucker. Guess I'll have to toughen up some.

What type of enzymatic cleaner would you suggest? I've tried straight vinegar, but that must not have done the trick.

There are a few on the market. The only one I've used is Nature's Miracle but there are others. The problem with carpet is the smell goes all the way through the pad so it's hard to get rid of it for doggie noses (you may think it's gone....)
