So last night was my first night with the dog and I understand he is new to the house and this enviorment but he would not stop crying last night when i put him in the cage to go to bed.  And to top it off he is scared of the cage because when my sister had it she used it as punishment and now he won't go near it.  How do i help him with both of these things.  Other then this he has been great.

Well, you may have a problem with crate training him since your sister used it as punishment.  Is he house trained?  How old is he?  Can you let him sleep with you or use a baby gate to confine him to one room instead of the crate?

Other than that start over with crate training....there's a post on crate training pinned at the top of this forum. JMO

Last night i let him sleep with me on the couch. As soon as I let him out he was fine. I think I am going to get a gate and try to just let him rome around one room. I felt so bad for him.

You might try feeding all his meals in the kennel for a little bit - positive associations. Even if you don't crate him every night, you want to get to a point where he is comfortable being crated if need be. Also leave his crate open with a comfy pillow in there and occasionally throw in treats so he can go in and out on his own. Eventually work up to closing the door when he eats but not right away.

Good suggestion from Gwacie concerning the food. Get some bits of chicken and just put them in there too. Leave the door open so he can go in and out as he wants to get the chicken. You may very well have to start from square one with crate training him if he has had a bad experience. Also... and I'm being very honest here.... if he has had unpleasant experiences with the crate in his previous "life"... he may never warm up to the crate. I would use a baby gate while you are gone or at night... and work on the crate situation during the times you are home.
