I have been considering posting up here the past several days because Baxter and I have been having some annoying problems. He's been starting to bark A LOT while in his crate and I know it's not that he's scared or anything because he's never acted that way in the last 3 weeks. I was very hesitant, but my husband convinced me to get a little pressurized air can, and we sprayed it lightly in his face when he started to bark. He seemed really surprised at first, but stopped barking after about the 4th or 5th time. It doesn't seem to hurt him at all, just irritate him mostly. So YAY it is quiet in the home again! (Makes for a happier hubby)

The second success (yes there are two!) was that I decided to try introducing a clicker into Baxters life. So far I've used it to try to teach him to sit as well as to stop pulling on the leash while we walk. I started using very small pieces of hot dog as a treat instead of bits of his food and he became MUCH more motivated. I think the clicker is really working as well because when we are walking together and he stayed close to me I'd click, and he'd immediatly turn and look at me, waiting for the treat. I think he enjoys figuring out what i'm trying to teach him, too, now that he actually understands it eventually. Before he never quite got it and neither of us was happy.

Anyhow -- sorry for the long post I am just so happy! I feel like we have an avenue that we can move forward on now in his training.

Teresa

I was just reading your post...ic see that my Baxter is not the only one on here...lol very cutie name. Do you have pics of your Baxter?

Also glad to here all is going well now, must be the name...they learn fast. My Baxter can sit, give kisses, lay down, shake paw, leave his treat till I say, and does well on his lead. and we have had him for almost 2 mths now.
Now I sound like a bragging mom...lol sorry!! (smile)

My Button has been exhibiting some new and strange behaviors the last year, basically ever since we adopted little Zipper. I don't know if it's insecurity or what. She has started to panic and hyperventilate when in a car (never did for 3 years!), not wanting to be crated in the same room with Zipper at night, barking & whining in her crate at night. We discovered early on that water pistol squirting (vet suggestion) works wonders to to curb unwanted behaviors like scratching us, carpet digging, or inappropriate mouthing/chewing. This week it worked instantly when she started barking/yipping in the crate at bedtime. One squirt in the face and she laid down and went to sleep!

We have also used a squirt bottle as a deterent to bad behavior. Rarely have to use it at all now because it was very effective. LOL I can pick the squirt bottle up and aim it in his direction and it usually is enough to quiet him. Forgot to take it to Jamboree and at 3am in the morning when he kept barking, I was sure wishing I had remembered to bring it!

Hooray for you & Baxter! I've never heard of using a pressurized air can, but if the air isn't too forceful if it hit them in ther eyes,  I bet that would be as effective as a squirt bottle.. and handy for when you don't want everything wet!
