Has anyone tired the wireless fences with there dogs?  I have 25lb Decker and I am considering one of these fences.  I would like to stick with the wireless fence if possible so I could carry it with me when I go to different places.

I already have a fenced in back yard but would like to be able to go in the front or side yards without him on a leash.  I have no experience with the wireless or wired fences except holding onto a collar to see how strong the shock was.  My dog is a very prey driven dog.  Will one of these fences contain him?

I do not have one, but one of my foster dogs lives with one and does fine. My concern is the strong prey drive yours has. There may be things he is willing to go after and take the shock. With Rat Terriers being so smart it is very likely he could test it.

I would also suggest always being with him when he is in the yard so other animals can be kept at bay. Because its not only keeping him in, but keeping others out and him safe.

I hope this helps some.

I use one with Max and I LOVE IT!! We have had it for a little over a year and he has NEVER tested it! He was shocked twice right at the beginning and quickly learned what the warning beep was. I can stand on the other side of the perimeter with cheese....his ALL TME FAVORITE treat and he will only bark at me from his side. (as if to say "NO!! YOU come HERE!" ) When we use our fire pit, he won't even come over to sit with us, even though it is inside of his perimeter, b/c it is so close to the edge of it....again we get barked at. He even gives up chasing butterflies once they cross over the perimeter. I wouldn't trade my invisible fence for anything!

Yes, we have the invisible fence and it is the best investment for the dogs! Well worth the cost..

I had one for years... but don't have one anymore. It worked very well. They are much cheaper now than when I got mine too!

We had an invisible fence one a long time ago. Our bird dog Cocoa would run right through it to chase squirrels, but wouldn't cross it to come back home, and our lab mix would never cross it.

I have to tell you a little story about our walk yesterday though. We walk by 2 airedales in our neighborhood that are contained by an invisible fence. We've walked by them for years with no problems, and yesterday one of them crossed the fence and ran out into the road as we were walking by. I don't think he had his collar on, however.

One other thing I have noticed over the years is that if there are loose dogs in the neighborhood, as there often are in our neighborhood, these airedales are not protected by a fence. The loose dogs can go right up to them. I've seen stray dogs off and on over the years in our neighbor's yard with their airedales.

I would be with him if he was outside of the normal fenced part of the yard. One question I have regarding the wired vs wireless. The wired fences shock and then stop after you cross the line, but don't the wireless fences shock unless they get a signal? So wouldn't it shock until he comes back inside the perimeter? If this is the case I would think this would help deter running past the perimeter and not coming back.

I apologize; I misunderstood your question...I'm not sure about wireless fences. We had used an invisible fence with Heidi and Cocoa.

If they do go outside their perimeter, it will shock them for 30 seconds or until they come back inside the perimeter.  The 30 seconds, is so that if a dog were to get out and NOT understand to come back in, it won't get shocked for however long it takes for someone to figure out the dog is out. (did that even make since?)

I've never used one. But I've always worried about big, aggressive dogs getting INTO my yard and maybe doing harm to my dogs. That's why I've never tried one.

I don't use one, but I've heard that if your dog keeps testing the fence and doesn't learn, they get use to the shock and you have to keep getting ones that have a higher shock. But I've only heard that that can happen...besides, I think most ratties are smart enough not to try to cross more than once.
