Hi everyone,

I need some advice, I am picking up Daxter tomorrow at the airport, yeah he finally come home

I read the Cesar Milan book about how you supposed to do when meeting your dog for the first time. Since dog use his nose, eyes and ear in that order to learn about new thing, he said that we should not come to approach the dog, instead let the dog come to us so he learns that we are the pack leader. But the thing is my dog will come in the crate, so he is not going to be able to come approaching me since he is stuck inside the crate.

What usually people do when you pick up the dog for the first time and he is inside the crate, how do you introduce yourself to your dog and telling him that you are the pack leader and he is the follower? What is the proper way to establish that kind of relationship from the beginning when you meet him for the first time.

And if I change his name from Trevor to Daxter, do you think he will recognize his new names after a few days?

Help please! Thanks.

Congratulations on your new dog. Is he a rescue/adoption or a puppy? I'm sure if you just take your time and talk quietly to him, offering a treat, he will respond pretty well. Remember he may be very scared, so opening the door of the crate in a safe place and allowing him to come out on his own, may be your best bet. Hope things go well and you and Dax have many happy years together.

He is from Ratbone Rescue and he is about 4 years old. Maybe I should just keep him inside the crate until I got home before I release him then? I am thinking to get him out of the crate when I am still at the airport but maybe I should wait until I got home in case he is running away.

I would definately wait until you can have him out in an enclosed area. Either a fenced in yard or a room of your home. LOL Some one on this site brought their dog home and as soon as she opened the car door, the pup slipped the collar off her neck and took out running. The new Mom had to chase the frightened dog down and grab her to keep her from getting hurt(hit by a car) Not the most pleasant of homecomings for either of them, BUT they both recovered and are doing fine now.

Congrats!
Yes, you probably should wait till you get home. And don't approach him when he is nervous, like you read, let him come to you. When I first met my grandpa's little nervous Rosie, I tried to go up to her, but she just growled and backed away. So all I did was wait, try to offer her a treat now and then, and she came up on her own.

Thanks for the advice, I agree that it's better to wait until we got home before releasing him from the crate. It's also safer for both of us

Daxter update: I pick him up last night, poor boy his flight was delayed for 3 hours so he was in his crate for almost 12 hours. He jumps right out the moment I open his crate inside my car, took him out to pee and small walk then we drive home. He sit next to me at the front seat the whole time, just sleeps and jumps up when I am about to turn inside the parking garage. I guess he knows he is home

He is doing fine except his right eyes is watery and a bit red. His nose is dry though, do I need to take him to the vet for check up or should I wait a day?

He might just have allergies or it might be conjunctivitis. Doesn't sound serious but it wouldn't hurt to take him to the vet, get it checked and also establish him as a patient with your vet.

BTW is that him in your avatar? He's adorable!

Hi, Monica -

I  just happened to read your e-mail and realized that I helped to arrange your home visit for your adoption. I'm glad to hear that things are working out so well. Daxter is a cutie!  Best of luck to both of you.

He is probably dehydrated from traveling. Most dogs won't eat or drink much when traveling. Give him plenty of water to drink. I gave mine Smart Water with electrolites in it when we drove 10 hrs to Tennessee.

Hi Kathy, yes it is me and thanks for all your help with the home visit.

Hi everyone, sorry I haven't been checking in for a few days, I am still adjusting with Daxter and seems like my day all gone by just taking care of him. I share more stories when I get more time in the next few days and maybe picture too. I took some yesterday. I am still stressing out that he bark when I leave him alone so I've been working to correct that. So far so good, keep my fingers cross he will be quiet when I am going back to work on Wednesday
Thanks again for all the advice and kind words! You guys are the best support group that I ever know.
