OK, She rings a bell to go out, she tucks herself into her crate at night, and she's limited on water (as much as i hate to do it). Her water's taken up 2 hours before bed, and she's fine for 8 hours in her crate. She's out and about for 1.5 hours in the morning with a potty when she comes out and right before she goes in, with no access to water. She goes back in for 10 hours while i'm at work and i come home to a potty crate. She's usually sitting in it, so I know she's not making a potty and sleeping area in there. I've ruled out not liking it and rebelling, I've ruled out crate size by using a divider, and I've hopefully ruled out too much water.

PS: and she did OK for a while. it may have been only a difference of 9.5 hous compared to 10, but she was for a few months making it all day without an accident, and free access to water at night and in the morning. |

that's way to long in a crate for her age and size. She probably can't hold it any longer. Do you have a bathroom or room you can put her in for such a long time as opposed to the crate?
Edited: Even if she was okay that is still a very long time to be crated. I would try to find a bathroom and close her off in there until she can be trusted with free reign of the house, 10 hours is long without water too. JMO |

| unfortunately, i have no other options. the apartment has a kitchen that has too big an opening to gate, and she licks the toilet bowl, so the bathroom is out. there is no other space that isn't carpeted. i live too far away to come home at lunch, and i'm alone now, so there's no one else that can let her out. day care is an option, but only about once a week. i can't afford more than that. i'm gonna try to talk my boss into letting me work through lunch so i can be home 30 minutes earlier. 1 year and 17 lbs. shouldn't that be old enough to hold it all day? |

Bailey is 2 years old (was 2 in Oct. '07) and weighs 9.5 lbs and stays crated for 9 hours every day during the work week..we have no choice. However, I don't crate my dogs at night. Some may disagree with me, but I personally feel crating a dog for 8 hours at night and 9-10 hours during a day isn't fair to the dog. The mistake I see people make is that the dog is crated from 8am-6pm and then gets to sit around with the family until about 10pm and is then re-crated until 7am. This dog was only out of the crate for 5 hours and was then expected to sit around and do nothing. That doesn't seem fair. Now, this doesn't mean that you are doing any better just because you leave the dog free to roam the house all day. The house is just like a really big crate. The dog still needs to work. So, moral of the story, the more effort you put in while the dog is out of the crate, the better behaved your dog will be in the crate. So what do you do with Pepper between the time you get home from work and the time you go to bed? I personally think therein lies your answer. Also during the 1-1/2 hours you are out with Pepper in the mornings. Does she just walk around or do you do anything with her to tire her out? |

Good points Nora. Also, you were having success at 9.5 hours and failure at 10 hours, correct? There is probably a threshold there for her where she started getting used to holding until 9.5 hrs and you added the extra time and she doesn't make it. It's hard to say. At 1 they are still sometimes a bit spotty depending on the dog on how long they can hold out without going. I remember Eddie would do great at 8.5 hours but could not do 9.5-10 hours without an accident. Roxy, however, could hold it for days right from the start. |

In the morning, she does a bit of training. She's taking her pills with commands and treated, then we do a few tricks just for her to get a couple treats to make sure the pills go down. About 5 pea sized treats total. Then she lays on the bed when I get dressed, but when I'm getting ready in the bathroom, she gets more commands for brushing, letting me see her teeth, and checking her ears for cleaning. In the evening, she's pretty lethargic because of her bronchitis meds. I was talking her for 45 minute walks every day till she was just too worn out for it. She was having accidents during the time i was walking her though. The only reason she's been sleeping in her kennel at night is because she goes in on her own. She actually sleeps on the bed in the evening, like she is now, then when she comes in after her pre-bed potty, she goes right in. Sometimes she doesn't even wait to get her leash off. |

| I did not realize she is on meds, Kristin... that may play a HUGE part in this. It might be an after effect of the medication.... after all, medication does mess up our systems! Try not to crate her for 10 hours. Do you have a friend who can come let her out during the day at all? 10 hours is a long time. A 1/2 hour can make a big difference... and Pepper is still young. |

Unfortunately, I don't have a spare key, and they can't be duplicated. I was hoping it would pass. I just don't want her getting used to it and learning that it's OK. If there was any way to help her out in the meantime you guys would know what to do! Oh well. She's only on them till Friday anyways. I guess I'll work with crating this weekend and remind her how things work. |

If you have no other option than keeping her crated for 10 hours, why don't you invest in an x-pen, put her crate a corner of the kitchen, along a wall anywhere that you can put the x-pen around it. That gives her some space to come out of the crate, maybe a pee pad for her if you feel it is needed. You could put a couple of toys for her to play with etc. That way if she wants to go into her crate and if she doesnt' she has somewhere to go and play. This is what I do with my guys and they are not in their crate for that period of time. They also sleep in bed with us so they are not crated at night. |

Kristin, I think 10 hours is just too long for anyone. I had a cocker spaniel who was much older and larger than Pepper and there was no way that she could last over 8 hours. I think you should seriously consider finding a way to put her open crate in the kitchen or in the bathroom. If you close the lid on the potty, she can't get into it. If she is licking the outside, it is because she is thirsty and it is cold. I would not withhold water all day. I would put a water bowl in the bathroom, a pee pad, and an open crate. JMO, but if you can't work something out for her...maybe you should move to a place that is closer to work. I know it's hard. I used to work about 9-10 hours away and had 2 min-pins. I got sick of cleaning up pee and poo in my kitchen every day after a long hard day at work, so I invested in putting a doggie door and a fence in my back yard. That was a huge expense, but it was well worth my sanity! Sometimes, we just have to make big changes if we want to be doggie and people parents. Good Luck and I hope Pepper is feeling better from her bronchitis soon....Just a thought, but when I am on meds for sinsus...they usually say drink a lot of water with them...they dry you out.
Also, what do you mean she has accidents when on her walk? That is when she is supposed to go, don't scold her for that. Sorry if I'm preachy...I just love little Pepper since she was our Secret Santa puppy and it makes me sad to think of her sick and pee'ing in her crate.
Good Luck and lots of love to little Miss Pepper!

I also think as long as the lid is down on the toliet and the bowl is wiped it's okay if she licks it, you can set up a bed in the corner for her with some toys, at least she will have movement during the day instead of just laying in her crate for that long. If not I would do the X pen idea, it's not fair that she potties in there and has to lay there too. In my opinion there are other options. |

What I meant by her having accidents when I was walking, is that she'd still have accidents in her crate, on the days surrounding her walks. She is not restricted on water anymore. I just did that for a couple days to see if it would help.. it didn't. I'm going to wait till she's off the medicine to worry about it too much. I need to know if it's medicine induced or just her limits. Unfortunately, I just moved to my apartment here and can't move closer to work. Where I was living before has been the same distance. Rent is at least 50% higher if I go closer to work though. It's in the expensive county. |

Good luck with it all Peppers mommy. when she is big enough are you going to let her have run of the apartment? maybe with the x pen that would help familiarize her with some limited freedom. I think that is a great idea. good luck with whatever you choose for pepper. |

| Well, she did good today. She drank a bunch of water in the morning, even. I took her for a jog when I got home cuz I was so happy with her. Usually it's just a walk. I'm still watching her like a hawk, though. |
