First of all I am so happy to have found this site, I've been reading all morning.
I have a two year old female non-spayed Rat Terrier named Minerva. She came to us at about 5 months old because the person who bought her coudn't handle her activity level.
We also have an 8 year old female non-spayed husky/shepherd mutt, Fable. Fable and Minnie have been the best of friends for the past two years ... eating together, playing together, etc.
Suddenly there have been 5 pretty nasty dog fights, the latest resulting in a bite to Minnie. I am honestly not sure who's instigating the issues, but of course Minnie being the small one is getting the most hurt.
Minnie has always play bit Fable's back legs and jumps up in Fable's face during play ... Fable has tolerated this calmly (and motherly) for two years. Is it possible she's fed up?
Fable has always play bit Minnie's back when they're running to chase the same toy ... it has never bothered Minnie in the past, maybe now she's fighting back?
We're just keeping everyone seperate right now, but it's scaring me and breaking my heart at the same time ... this all just stared within the past month or so, but it seems to be happening more often in the past three weeks. The two times I've seen the issue start, I can honestly say I don't know WHO'S instigating it, one minute everyone's getting along and then BAM!
I'm wondering why this is all of a sudden an issue in our once loving 'pack'??? These two have always shared food, toys, laps, etc ...
We recently adopted a new puppy (large breed neutered male mutt), but the issues with Minnie and Fable started before the puppy's arrival, we just thought it was an isolated incident before we added a new baby! Both Fable and Minerva like the puppy and the feeling is mutual, but again, everyone is seperated right now for safety reasons.
Thanks for listening and any help/advice would be most appreciated ... I'm just heartsick right now.

I have a two year old female rattie, Daisy, and an 8 to 9 year old femal husky/shepherd/maybe retriever mix as well. However, both my females are spayed. May I ask why yours aren't? That would be my first recommendation - have them fixed. Your older, larger dog may be beginning to have back/hip/leg problems that cause her to be more irritated by nipping and playing by your rattie. I would definitely have a completely thorough physical done by a vet to rule out health issues. Because of the size differences, you are correct in keeping them separated when you aren't present to keep a close eye on them. It will need to be addressed in some fashion asap and especially before the new male puppy gets older/larger and starts participating. |

Thanks for the warm welcome! I am definitely going to set up some check ups for each girl with the vet and will inquire about spaying. I'm not sure why, but we have always neutered our male dogs, but never spayed our female dogs.
I think I've figured out a way to have a picture of Minerva up ... where do I go to post the 'other' family members?
Thanks,
Lacey |

I see Minerva and she is beautiful !!!!! I think spaying will help, but I would also rule out physical issues for both that may be playing a role and, of course, the older, larger Fable is the most likely to be having problems due to her age, size and possible breed (I think shepherds may have a tendency to hip problems?) but Minerva should get a check up too, to be certain it's not her. If you want to add more pictures (and you definitely should) go to the Photos:Ratties thread or Photos:Members and Misc. thread and Add New Topic (like you did here). In those threads, after typing a message, underneath are three file upload boxes where you can click on Browse and go to a photo file on your computer and upload it/them. The files need to be in jpg format and less than 125 kb in size |

I have heard (from breeders, my females are spayed) that unspayed females are actually worse at fighting than males. Unspayed females are also at higher risk of cancer and pyometria (a potentially fatal infection of the uterus) so please - consider spaying both girls asap. JMO
Since this has started recently and your rattie is now 2 it sounds as if hormones could be involved. |

| Yes! Unspayed females will fight more than any other combination of sexes! Hormones, heat and just plain bitchiness are much worse in unspayed females. If one goes into heat and another has not it can bring the other in. Heat causes some pack issues too. If a less dominate female goes into heat the more dominatnt female will beat the whee out of her. Pack dynamics is really interesting but sometimes can lead to bloodshed and death. If you have multiple dogs and are not breeding life will be much much easier if all are spayed and neutered. |

I am convinced ... we are meeting with our Vet on Tuesday afternoon to set up visits for Minnie and Fable to both be spayed. We're also having Fable checked out for any hip/leg/rear end issues that may be causing her to be sensitive ...
I really appreciate all the help and the friendliness of this board, I beleive Minnie and I will continue to read and get to know all of you better!

Glad you've decided to have them both fixed! I do think it will make a big difference. If you can, having them both done at the same time can be a bonus because they'll both be recovering at the same time and one will not irritate the other. Let us know what the vet has to say about Fable. Glad you are enjoying the site. By the way, a big THANK YOU for taking in and rescuing/adopting three dogs Looking forward to having you hear. Please post often (and don't forget pics!!!!) |

I just saw this... Welcome to the forum, and yes indeed Minerva is gorgeous! My very first recommendation would be to absolutely have them both spayed. Hormones play a huge part in a canine's behavior... and to what extent we humans cannot know 100%. Once they are spayed, it will take some time for their hormones to level out and affect their emotions and ultimately their behavior. Your rat terrier is maturing and her behavior is bound to change at this age. You are wise to keep them separated at times and supervise them when they are out together. May I suggest a book to you? It's called "The Dog's Mind" by Bruce Fogle. It's a wonderful resource and delves into why dogs act the way they do. It is NOT a training manual, this is a dog behavior manual. It teaches you how to read and understand your dogs behavior and why he does the things he does. Bruce Fogle is very articulate and well read, and knows what he is talking about. |

Hi, and welcome to the site!!
It's good to hear you're getting your dogs fixed. Unspayed females can be pretty bad together, because of hormones, heat cycles, and the urge to dominate each other. Spaying your dogs also removes the risks of your dogs getting uterine, cervical, and ovarian tumors/cancer and nearly eliminates the chance of them getting pyometra. Above all that, it also prevents unwanted litters.
Keep us posted on how it goes!
By the way, Minerva is a beautiful dog and I LOVE her name!!

I just can't beleive how wonderful everyone on this site has been ... I guess it takes special people to love the Rats!!! I'm home now and Minerva is so sad ... we have her in her crate (just put her in) so Fable can have some time in the house and Minnie is just crying (not from fear) because she wants to play with her friend ...
I will keep the seperation thing going for now, get them both spayed and perhaps even meet with an in house trainer (hope it's not ridiculously expensive). But these are my 'kids' too ... I have to say my teenage boys are being AWSOME about this ... they're rotating the dogs and playing with everyone seperately so that nobody feels jipped.
I'm going to go post some photo's now of the 'pack' and thank you for the nice words regarding adoption ... all of our dogs (past and present) came from shelters and rescues except Minnie who was a 'give-a-way' from the family who bought her and couldn't deal with her and our cat Mystery who was a kitten born in our yard from a feral cat that we cannot seem to catch, so we end up with litters constantly and slowly and sadly see them all dissappear ... but Mystery is our special indoor baby who is the loviest kitty!!!
Anyway, again, thanks for ALL your support and suggestions ... photo's will be up soon.

Hi, and welcome to the site! Minerva is gorgeous. I love the names of everyone in your pack...very unique. My brother's friend had 2 unaltered female dobies and had the same problem...many nasty fights. The problem there was the fact that both girls wanted to be apha or "top dog." But once they got spayed, the fights weren't nearly as often or as serious. I hope your girls will become best friends again once they are spayed and the hormonal problems no longer exist. |

Thanks ...
Minerva was my favorite character in a chick lit book I read called Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie (it makes a great beach read if you're into that thing!)
Fable was the ONLY name on 2000dognames.com that my kids agreed on eight years ago ... I love it!
Ozzy was almost impossible NOT to name Ozzy ... our puppy has the EXACT same goth eyeliner as Ozzy Osbourne ... now if only Petco sold rawhide bats, tee hee
Speaking of dog names ... is it just us or does anyone else have a zillion nicknames for their rat ... Minerva answers to the following:
Minerva, Minnie, Minnie-Pinata, Minnie-Pin, Bitty, Biskitty, Bitty-Bitty Boo, Bumpa Skitty, Skitten, PuppyKat ... the list goes on. I'm not sure WHY we've come up with so many nicknames for her, we don't do that with all our dogs ... but she's just so ... I don't know ... so much personality, each one deserves a new name ... of course she answers to all of them or none of them, depending on "her" mood!!!
I have had many types of dogs all my life and NOTHING as unique as Minerva!!!

Ahhh, you've discovered the love of a rattie - no going back now!!!! Had you seen/heard of them before you got Minerva (love the name!)? Many of us here have had and loved many dogs, but there's something about these ratties...quite a few of us refer to them as our "soul dogs" (aka soul mates)!!! There's something unique about their intelligence and "emotions", I guess. I never in a million gazillion years would've thought I'd ever be the type of person to put "bling" on my dog, or a sweater! HECK, before Daisy I didn't think "real" dogs came in size small |

My ratties have about a million nicknames too...and I keep coming up with more. they answer to them all. yeah, each nickname tends to be for each mood of the dog, and both Molly and Lucy have different nicknames. Lucy (avatar) is such a delicate, prissy princess and she knows it, while Molly (my black tri rattie) is such a tough little tomboy who thinks she's a rottweiler. ratties definitely are unique...we like to say that they are the best kept secret of the doggie world because they are the dogs everyone wishes they had but didn't know it. |

Ah ... no I was never into 'little dogs' ... ugh! We used to have three shepherd mix mutts ... BIG DOGS, REAL DOGS ... ha! We were first introduced to rats when my kids started to take music lessons (guitar/drums) and the owner of the music shop had a rat named "Ziggy" ... he was so cool and went to the music shop every day with his owner. We thought he was so neat and cool, he was everyone's buddy! Then just a few weeks later, I was at work and one of the girls was trying to find a home for a little girl ... Apparently the family who bought her was having trouble with her and couldn't keep her. And in an instant of insanity I said, "I'll take her"!?!?!? I met the woman half way and this little 'thing' jumped into my arms and decided I was hers!
My husband loves her (and secretly I think he's her favorite human now!), but he put his foot down at 'bling' and 'outfits' ...
Minerva is tiny, still under 10 pounds, but in her heart she is the size of a rotweiller!
Favorite moment: When we give her a rawhide chewie for whatever reason we ask her first if she wants a 'Chewbacca" to which she starts to freak out ... once we give her one she starts to run around the house with it in her mouth like a mad women ... we refer to this as the "Wookie Dance" ...
She just keeps up entertained all the time, and even with all her energy, she still is a snuggly little love much of the time!!!

I can Sam The Sampster, Sampson, Sammy Dog, Sammers, and other names that I can't remember. I know what you mean about "little dogs"...those only small dogs I like are Chinese Cresteds and Italian Greyhounds because they aren't yippy or nippy like most other small breeds...and the hairy hairless chinese cresteds look like little ponies. I also have an almost soft spot for toy ratties because, well, they ARE ratties after all, and my grandpa has 2 of them. They're cute, but I'd never get one. I always liked the larger dogs that can eat whoever you don't like. She likes rawhides? Have you ever looked at bully sticks? Many people prefer bully sticks over raw hides because they aren't processed with chemicals and don't cause blockages in the intestines. They do cost more though. So what are bully sticks? Prepare to laugh... Bully sticks are made of 100% all natural bull penises. (laugh time) Here is a thread on this site with a place were you can buy them for cheap: http://www.rat-terrier.com/Home/tabid/37/forumid/4/tpage/1/view/Topic/postid/253088/Default.aspx |
