 Rattie

We've got a little Rat Terrier, named Milo, who is almost 7 months old. We got him when he was 13 weeks old so we've had him for the majority of his life and as the days go by, he's more and more active for later and later into the night. It started off that he would be active and want to play from when we got home and get tired at around 830 or 9pm which was fine by us, but now he's active and running and jumping over and on us all night from when we get home at night (we both work 8-5 M-F), every night until 1130 and later. Given, i know its an active breed and he's still young, but i was just curious if this is "normal".
We've tried everything from playing fetch to walking him and nothing seems to tire the dog out. i've literally thrown a toy for him for 4+ hours straight and he just keeps on bringing it back, nonstop.
On the weekends, we're usually both home all weekend and he seems to be less active during the weekends but still willing to play all day if we're available and not busy cleaning and whatnot.
I guess my questions are, is this normal for this age? and what are some suggestions to get this dog to "tire out". It was fun at first, but we need to do more stuff than play with him all night every night and its harder and harder to do it when he's jumping on us and barking at us all night because he wants to play.
Any suggestions would be great |

Yes... it's normal. This is a very active breed and your dog is maturing into the adolescent stage of his life and simply is going to become more active. Let me say that if, in fact, you played fetch with a 7-month old dog for "four hours straight"... it's my opinion that's too much. Sounds like your dog needs some mental stimulation as well as physical. Mental stimulation will help tire him out and is good for him too! Hide his toy and tell him to "find it"... start by hiding it under a pillow while he watches you put it there. Then say "find it" and he will of course find it immediately. Then start hiding it other places... it becomes a great game and is wonderful mental exercise. You can train your dog to a treadmill if you have one... or train the dog to run with you while you are biking. But at the age of 7 months, his growth plates are not fully developed... so please don't do long stretches of exercise where it strains his muscles excessively and is hard on the joints. Wait until he's fully developed for that. This is an active breed and is not a breed for everyone. But they generally have "off switches" and as you train them, they will become calmer and will be content to snuggle on the couch with you. Training sessions will also stimulate them mentally and help tire them out. Try working with him 15 minutes a day on a specific command... |

Nora's right on the money with her advice. They are go go go until at least 2 years old, then they start to have SOME quiet times but are still very active dogs. Giving him a job is a great idea (job meaning something to learn or do). You *could* also consider fostering or adopting a friend for Milo as two terriers will often run and play and tire each other. You still need to interact and train but it cuts down on their abundance of energy a bit (AND you are helping out a dog in need!!). |

| I have trained Lazer with agility, he has been training LOL since he was 3 mnths old. Quest is also into agility, this keeps them both mentally and physically busy. Also having more than 1 rattie helps keep the other one occupied. |

It felt like Trixi was the same way...we got her when she was 7 monhts old and once she recovered from parvo...boy did she recover! Seemed like this girl was NEVER SLEEPY! LOL.... when she was 14 months, we got Toa and now EVERY NIGHT without fail, when I go to the bedroom and turn the lights out, she snuggles right in and goes rght to sleep, even if its 9 or 9:30.... they play all the time and I also take them for pretty long walks MOST days! Good luck and I agree with the physical and mental stimulation! |

You're right, maybe it wasn't 4 hours straight, but aside from eating i played with him all night, he might have done something else for a minute or two at a time but that was about it. Thats a good point about mentally stimulating. I guess we've been trying to figure out how to mentally stimulate him and haven't really come to any conclusions. For some reason, the tricks and training didn't ever come to mind. We are taking him to obedience classes and whenever we take him he seems to tire out pretty easily that night. I always thought the reason was that he was just so excited to see the other dogs, but the training that we do might actually be the cause. We will definitely try that out. Taking on another rat might settle him down you say? I know that you said they wear each other out. I guess my first thought would be that they would both be crazy wild. Has your experiences been that the two would wear each other out as opposed to been even more wild? |

When we got Toa in January...ALL THEY DID for the first 3 DAYS is WRESTLE...NON STOP it seemed...LOL...but they were jsut getting used to eachother! Now, they will wrestle or chase for 5-10 minutes and sleep for 30-45. they can get eachother going when one of them wants to play, but again, usually only for about 10 minutes. Currently for instance, mine are both sleeping. We got up at 7:45, they ate breakfast, we for a short leisurely walk (15-20 minutes) they played, layed on the balcony, played a little here and there and now theyre both passed out! happy ratties! They will sleep for a bit, I will take them for a longer walk, they will go in their crates while we run errands and then they will play a while before bed. IT is really working out GREAT having two...but thats JMO...I wouldnt want to pressure you into getting another just because they will "wear eachother out" Its a big committment, more money, more vet trips, more patience...adding another personality tot he home isnt easy, but if its right for your family, its worth it in my opinion! |

Ratties are usually hyperactive, especially when they're puppies. Except for my dog, Sam. He sleeps all the time unless he's forced to get up. I guess he's the one exception. |

| Welcome to the site. Yes, being active even late at night is not unusual for these dogs. A man that saw Button when she was a pup said he had one and that she was gonna "wear me out for a year" but it was well worth what was ahead at the end of the line. I found that Button got her MOST active between 8-10 pm. But if we played fetch for 30 minutes, I learned I could wear HER out! LOL |

When Mitzy was a puppy getting her another rattie puppy to play with was a great decision. They played and kept each other occupied. We still played with them, walked them, etc. But having 2 was great because they did get tired out easier.
However, I also really wanted another rattie. I wouldn't have gotten one just to entertain Mitzy. You have to consider the additional money that 2 will cost for food, vet, flea meds, etc. and also that you will need to walk and train two instead of just one. If that is something you want - then getting another young rat terrier can be a great idea! JMO |
