Okay guys, i need my first bit of advice with the new pup. Let me paint the picture of what just happened and why I am at a loss for what to do.
So I took the dogs out about 45 minutes ago because they had been playing and drank alot of water. Well Gus, didn't pee, so I figured it just hadn't hit him yet and I would take them out in a bit again and just watch him closely for any sign he neded to go out.
Well we were sitting there and he was loving on me and then he went over to the other couch to go snuggle with Ricky. Well about a minute later, Ricky just holds him out, looks at me and goes "he just peed on me and the sofa" I was confused at first, but then I looked and Gus infact peed all over Ricky and my sofa, no warning, no whining, no nothing. I grabbed him as quick as I could, said Gus, NO, and then said outside and brought him out. He didn;t pee anymore, but the little guy looked as confused as to what happened as Ricky did. I now have Gus on a long leash but its causing turmoil because CoCo keeps barking and trying to get him off so he can play with her, so now I just put her in her room with a bully stick.
I just, I'm at a loss. I can;t figure out what triggered it, how to prevent it from ever happening again, or even how to handle this. I took him to the vet yesterday, but it was only to get him established at my vet and get his stiches out. Was this just a very weird experience, or should I be worried there is a bigger issue here???
HELP!!!! |

Ok, this is JMO, but it doesn't sound like a big deal to me....although I'm sorry about Ricky and your couch. Unless he has a UTI (which the vet can rule out) it just sounds like he was distracted and didn't pee when he should have and then it became too much to hold. Just like a little kid that drinks a lot and doesn't pee and all of a sudden they have an accident, ya know?
I know with Mayfly she's very easily distracted from doing her business outside so I have to really make sure she goes. Maybe if you take him a little walk when he won't go out in the yard right away? That usually makes mine potty. Other than that bring him back in and crate him or tether him to you (I know that's a pain but part of the process sometimes....).
But it really just sounds like he didn't go when he should have and his little bladder just "let go" all of a sudden. |

Maggie, it really sounds like an instance of he was just too busy and "forgot" he had to go peepee until it happened. Blondie has done that before when she was playing with Andy. Only once or twice but she's done it. She was playing so hard and I think she was just distracted. If it doesn't happen again, I wouldn't be too worried about it. |

Sometimes they forget they have to go when young especially. I actually stay out with my dogs and "make" them go when I know they should have to. I just keep pointing them back to the yard with the 'go potty' command. Eddie used to be really bad about this (forgetting to go then having an oops in the midsts of something else) but since he turned 3 the problem stopped. He was a bit of a slow learner. |

Maggie... of course he was confused. He didn't know what your "NO" meant... all he knew was that you were upset. Now if your hubby had caught him in the act and said "no"... it may have had a more positive effect. But you didn't catch him in the act.. you were informed of what happened after it happened.
Are you putting him in a crate at all? What I would have done is..... if you take him out and he doesnt "go"... bring him back in and put him in his crate for 10-15 minutes and then take him out again. If he doesn't go again... put him back in the crate. He's much less likely to urinate in his crate than somewhere else. Once he goes outside and urinates THEN you can cuddle with him or play with him... or relax in whatever way you wish to relax with him and feel safe that he's empty.
There are many reasons that this could have happened... but it really doesn't matter. What matters is that it become a one-time incident and doesn't happen again. That's where you come in... with crate in hand! LOL |

The more I sat back and realized it, I think you guys are right, it was a one-time oppsie kind of thing. He drank alot of water, and when we went out for a stroll, I wasn't as careful at making them potty because we were walking and not out on a set "potty time". I didn't think it was an agression thing, and I still don;t so I'm glad y'all don;t think it was either. Sometimes I need a little assurance. Nothing has happened since then, nor has it happened again, so I thin kit was just a one-time accident. I'm eatching him a little more carefully now and making sure that if he doesn;t potty every time we go outside, that he either stays on leash or goes into his room. Nora- as for crating him, we're getting there slowly but surely. Gus came to me as a crate hater, and we are trying our hardest to get him to stay in the crate while we are gone. I've been taking it step by step, getting him in the crate with treats, trying to feed him in the crate, putting him in the same room with us and giving him treats in the crate for short time periods, and he will sleep in the crate. I think he might have a bit of seperation anxiety and we are trying to get the crate to be his safe place. We haven;t gotten him to stay in the crate for longer than a 30 minute- an hour span while we are gone, but we are making slow and steady progress. |

| Amos did that a couple times when we first got him. Now that he is 6 months he lets us know....he is a vocal little guy and barks until you let him go out. He has also leaned to spell o u t. so we have to be careful and not let him hear us or we have to calm him down and let him know that he cannot go out to play. |

Lucy was sleeping in my lap while I watched a movie on Thursday... she suddenly peed on me while she was still fast asleep! I couldn't believe it! Sounds to me like he had a toddler potty training moment... to busy to go potty until it was to late. Rylee has them sometimes to. LoL! |

Maggie,
Time for Aunt Paula to pipe in LOL! I think he might have been trying to tell you when he was giving affection. Sometimes their signals get crossed.
Here's my personal story with our very first rattie. Franky was a puppy and my husband thought it would be funny to put him on the bed by me. I was sleeping on my stomach and he put him near my rear. As soon as he got there he wizzed all over me and I woke up soaked! I was so irritated and had to change the sheets and take a shower. URG!
Like many said it happens. We all get excited at times and pee a little, right? LOL!
I am always here for you as well =) |

| If he drank a lot of water this definitely could have contributed to the situation of course. Am glad you are working on the crate, Maggie... you are wise to take things a step at a time, slowly... consistently... sounds like Gus may have a wee bit of "baggage" he might need to overcome, but no doubt you'll get there with him! Hey lady... we ALL need reassurances from time to time! Me too! *hugs* |

My Kaci would always run over and pee on Sasha whenever Sasha squatted to poo. I have no idea why - if he was marking her as his or what, but Sasha never corrected the behavior, so I didn't. I figured it was a dog thing. But Kaci was the only one who ever peed on another dog in my pack.
My first Rat, Bandit, peed on a German Sheppard once while we were walking. Talk about mortified!! I apologized profusely to the guy walking the sheppard, and the guy said, "no problem - your dog would probably kill my dog anyway...." and I asked him what he meant, and he said "my dog would probably choke to death on your dog" LOL... glad he had a good sense of humor...
Bandit also peed on a friend of mine's chocolate lab puppy. I think with Bandit, he had little man syndrome and it was definitely a dominance thing with him! LOL |

| Tucker has done this too! He peed in his sleep! After Charlie got neutered he peed on me twice. He was still a little loopy and the vet told me he might have some trouble holding it for a couple of days. |
