Okay so now that we finally have some warmer temps and some melting, we are going to be able to play outside. Yay! Here is my problem...whenever we play ball of any kind...basket ball, baseball, soccer, anything..Yaz barks and barks and barks. I HATE it! I always have to tell the kids not to go near the balls. I HATE that too. We all love to play but her barking drives us mad. I have even tried to play ball with her while the kids play ball but she ignores my efforts and continues to bark at them. Nora.....HELP! I want us to be able to play this year. |

Button used to be like that with all her toys when she wanted you to throw one. But now she's just like that with her Wiggly Giggly ball, because it makes such weird noises as it rolls. Nothing calms her barking and play growling down but taking the thing away from her. She's just so intense when she plays with it. Because of this, I won't let her play with it inside. I don't have any ideas how to stop Yas's barking over balls. How old is he? Some dogs will outgrow the excited play barking as they get a little older. Button sure did. |

Hey Peggy...Yaz will be 2 in June. Maybe this year will be better. I have my doubts though. |

I'm torn as to how to respond to this. The reason is that when I play fetch with Bailey, I WANT him to be excited, and I encourage it. I love this display of excitement and I do what I can to stimulate it ... he's communicating his excitement and happiness to me! Bailey has been trained NOT to bark when I give the "no bark" command. He will even stop barking while I'm playing with him if I command it ... which I've had to do on occasion if hubby is around because he wears hearing aids and it drives him nuts. But when I do that, it squelches his enthusiasm. I guess it's a personal preference that I don't wish to do that. I pretty much mandate that Bailey not bark in the house, so when we're outside playing fetch, I don't ask him not to bark. If you want Yaz not to bark while playing fetch, you need to teach him not to bark at other times first. I pinned a thread on this subject at the top of the training forum for those who might be interested. Don't start trying to teach him not to bark while he's excited to play ball... you would be fighting a losing battle. Start slowly... and once the command "QUIET" or "NO BARK" (whichever you choose to use) is engrained in your dog's head... you can apply it to different circumstances. |

Hi Nora...it's not when we are playing fetch with her. It's when we are trying to play ball without her. For example...the kids want to play basketball. Not really a dog activity. She barks incessantly. I TRY to play with her during this but she won't. If they so much as go near the basketball hoop she starts in. I did read your thread on barking and will be working on that with her but I really have my doubts that it will work outside. I am more than willing to play with her but she wants the ball that the kids have. |

HAHAHAHA !!! Wow! I got that one wrong, didn't I? I totally misunderstood! LOL Ok... put Yaz in his crate during these times. When we had a swimming pool years ago, my german shepherd wouldn't stay out of the pool. Everytime a kid jumped in, she dived in after the child, trying to "save" it. haha It became very stressful for everyone concerned... so I started crating her when people would come over to swim. I would also put the crate so Yaz can't see the kids playing ball. Sorry for the misunderstanding! LOL |

LOL...no problem. Am I expecting to much of her to just observe? I mean I would rather she be outside with us. She also didn't do well with crate training. We did it for 5 months and it was disastorous! She peed and pooed everytime we put her in. We followed every rule of crate training we could find but it just wouldn't work. So crating her is out. Next.

| If crating him is not an option...then as I see it you only have three choices. (1) Leave him in the house in a confined area... or (2) if you want him outside, you're going to have to train him not to bark and under these particular circumstances... that's not going to be easy. (3) Distract him with a raw bone... bully stick... kong filled with peanut butter or some other yummy treat... while the kids play. See if what he's chewing on (and I would keep him tied to something) will divert his attention enough to keep him quiet. |

Thanks Nora. I was just telling my husband today about the kong filled with peanut butter. She has also calmed down alot over the winter. We were just remarking today how when we first got her, the kids couldn't really play in the living room because Yaz would get so excited that she would jump all over them and nip at them. Now when the kids get wound up Yaz goes and hides like it's all just to much for her. So we will see. Like I said, I am going to work on the "quiet" command inside. Maybe that combined with a peanut butter stuffed kong will do the trick. |

hahaha (you chose the most difficult of the three choices! LOL)... but it's accomplishable if you work at it hard and long enough. Good luck to you! |

Yep, our Daisy does this as well....she loves balls....so we mostly experience this when we are in the pool playing volleyball....she goes nuts barking and yipping and whining to get at the ball..... We sometimes take Daisy to the park and she has a soccer ball....she pushes it all over the grass on her own....chasing it, biting it, growling at it..... So we are working hard on the "no bark" command around here as well..... Lynn |

Bailey has never been one to push a big ball (such as a soccer or basketball) around like some dogs do. I LOVE watching dogs do that -- it's so comical !! |
