Pepper has picked up everything I have taught her, and has done very well on a long lead at the park. She always has her eye on me and comes after me if we are too far apart. I found a place that does a training class that teaches all the benchmarks of the test, and then will even certify you when complete.  My question is, should I do it? She's almost a year old, but she is a lot more matured than just a few months ago, and I would like to get the good training in before she gets too reluctant and set in her habits.

I had always thought you have to train on your own or in standard training and then find a certified person to train you. Is this a legitimate class?

Any thoughts?

You can search for an evaluator here:

http://www.akc.org/events/cgc/cgc_bystate.cfm

You can also read about the 10 different stations of the CGC test:

http://www.akc.org/events/cgc/training_testing.cfm

My local shelter gives the test every June.  When Braxton earned his, we prepared by training in the yard, on leash, building on what he already knew from his previous training.  If a class will help you, and it's a legit evaluator, go for it!  Can't hurt!

Thanks for the info. The trainer for the class is on the evaluator list. I'm guessing that means it's legit?

How was the class/test for anyone that has taken it?

I havent done the class / test with my ratties, but I did do training and the test with my dobie a few years ago.  The classes we took were mostly obedience related and envolved lots of distractions---I worked my obedience training with her literally everywhere--in store parking lots with traffic and people with shopping carts running around everywhere,  on sidelwalks next to schools and playgrounds where kids and lots of screaming and running were going on, I took her to work with me so that she could ride in an elevator and go up and down several flights of stairs---every situation that I could think of that would have some sort of distraction, we trained until I knew that she was watching me and listening to me over everything going on around her.  She passed the test with flying colors!

Good luck---it's a great training process and SO worth it to have a well behaved dog.  Oh, and when you finish and pass the test, those letters "CGC" that AKC awards your dog with are officially part of her name from that day forward!

Thanks for the input! Too bad I don't have a building with an elevator handy! You did that after taking the class, or while you were in it?

The class is 6 weeks, then she takes the test. We really don't have time to take the class, work on it, then come back a few months later to test. It's all in one. She hasn't had any obedience classes yet, just basic stuff at home.

The classes we took were 6 weeks, also, but was one hour a night, one night per week, so those other 6 days & evenings each week we practiced on what we learned each week, plus, I threw in any extra stuff I could think of to let her have lots of experience in different situations.

I didn't take any classes... but because I've trained dogs, I knew the drill. You don't "have" to take classes, but it's probably smart for most people to do so. Paul gave you good advice... even though he took classes he did lots of homework on his own, and was smart to take Dar everyplace he could and do the drills with her in different environments... around different people... different surfaces (gravel -vs- pavement -vs grass -vs carpet -vs- hardwood -vs- ceramic tile -vs- dirt, etc.). It's not necessary for a dog to have his/her CGC certificate, but it serves as a nice 'measurement' as to how well behaved your dog is. If a dog can pass the test and perform the basic requirements... then you WILL have a well mannered dog.

Thanks so much! I was afraid this was just a way for them to make money. I did find the trainer's name on the AKC site, so that's good. I'm starting to get a list together of places to take her. There's a dog boutique that just opened in the area, I'd love to take her there. They have treats and toys all over the place! Being in Michigan, we barely have enough warm weather yet to do anything outside.

Can I take her into buildings if she's in training that normally don't allow dogs if I don't have the "dog in training" coat?

Probably not...
If a building (company) allows dogs, it will more than likely be posted. Most places allow service dogs but not "regular" dogs.

Pepper started her class today! She was good, kinda. She usually heels on the opposite side because of the trail we walk on (for her safety), so she had to get used to it, which she did. She did not want to stay really well. She did good with a stranger approaching, and she was good at first with the stranger touching, but then she wanted more attention, and started jumping. Her biggest issue is that her "down" involves scooting her butt back, and that doesn't happen on a rubber floor.

I think she was just being a puppy, and being in a new place with dogs all around, and smells all over.

You are absolutely RIGHT! She's a pup... in a strange place with strange people...and many new distractions. It sounds like she did very well, and I'm so proud of you for following through on this!
It's fun, isn't it?

I dont know about your location, but around here, dogs are allowed in the farm supply stores if they are on leash, and always Petsmart and Petco welcome dogs inside----those are excellent places to take a dog to practice listening to you amid various distractions.  I'm so glad you and Pepper are enjoying your classes----you will be amazed at how closely you guys will "bond" because of the extra time and effort you are putting into her training.  GOOD FOR YOU!!!

Thanks!

We worked a little today, but it's hard cuz I have about zero room in my apartment, and it's raining out. She REALLY does not like when she's in a stay (sit or down), and i walk around behind her. I have started holding a treat in front of her to get her to stay in position, but i know that will have to be only temporary. any other thoughts on this one? it seems to be her biggest weakness so far.

Only suggestion I might have to offer is "take it slowly".  If she doesnt like to stay in a sit or a down position for very long, then leave her in that position as long as you KNOW she will do it without correction, come back to her and praise her (or treat her, different people do it either way) and s l o w l y add an additional few seconds to her staying time each time you do it again.  Dont push her to go longer than she is comfortable doing right now, because, after all, she IS still a very young puppy, and her attention span will grow as she gets a little older.  Sounds like you are doing everything right so far, though, and I am thrilled to death that Pepper is doing so well at this!

Considering the other dogs in the class are about 3-4 years old, it just goes to show ya, how smart these pups really are!

Pepper has been training with me for a week now. Even though the classes are an hour long, and like you said she IS a puppy, I've only been doing 15 minute trainings every day. We took Sunday off, cuz it was rainy and yucky. She's gotten a lot better with the heel for some reason. She knows "heel" and "safety" for each side. Heel is the left, and safety is the right. Unfortunately, I have to do it this way because she can not heel on the standard side when we go on the path. Too many dangers. I even took her leash off in my building, and she went up one flight of stairs and down the hall perfectly. The last time she was off leash in the building, she ran. That was only 2 months ago. She's getting better with down, a little. Staying is making progress, I've started walking around behind here when we go outside, cuz that happens several times a day. So I put her leash on while she's sitting, then I issue Stay, and walk around behind her. She seems to be less concerned about the movement now. She's antsy, because she has to potty, but I had always allowed her to stay right in front of me before for treats, so she's gotta do these baby steps.

I'm also teaching her "come sit." She's still working on it, but it's something I did with my parents english setter to differentiate between come and sit at my side, and sit wherever you are (on the rug, in the kennel, etc.).

A lot of work indeed.

Well folks, the CGC class is done, and her test is tonight. I took her to day care today while I was at work so she could get her energy out. She is too hot on walks right now. She just wants to get to the next patch of shade and lay in it. She's sleeping right now after her day of playing. She should be alert, but not too energetic tonight.

Wish us luck!!

WE PASSED!!!!!!! Oh my, I was so nervous! She nearly didn't pass, but I was able to keep control of her, and that's the point of it, so they passed us! She wanted to go in front of me and approach the strange dog, but I corrected her right away and once she sat, she stayed, and didn't want to follow the other dog. I guess that was good enough for them. She did have to retake the stay portion. They are allowed to stand up, but she moved about a foot from her original position. I had to remember deep breaths, and it was a good thing she went to day care today while I was at work. It worked out really well. She was calmer, but I had to keep encouraging her to heel, because she didn't want to go anywhere.

So it was a fun experience. I would definitely take another class, as long as it is advanced, and smaller. She still gets frazzled by un-trained dogs. It's understandable though, because they are coming at her. I'm ok with working on that in the future.

She got ice cream and some of her new kibble. (She's starting the switch to EVO in a couple days, and she loves it as a treat right now.) This weekend, daddy's coming home for his first visit in 2 months, and she's going to get a harness setup for the car to keep her safe.

She fell asleep in my arms while we were waiting for them to say we passed. I think she knew she did everything right. :-)

The evaluator said the last CGC class they did, no one passed. Not even close. We even took a class picture. I'll post it here when they send it to me. I am all grins.
