Hello everyone,

I am going to have Spudz in his first dog show. I was wondering if any of you have done this and some things I could expect on this first show. I will tell you a bit of his personality. He loves other dogs, so I think that this might be a prob when we get into the show. He gets excited, so I know I have to get him to be calm. I was also watching videos of shows, and noticed that some dogs want to play with others while waiting to be shown. Should I try my hardest to keep him calm? Do people not like other dogs trying to play because this distracts them from being prepared... I kinda noticed this on the videos I watched. Thanks for your replys!

Very cool! I've never done it, but I've seen tons of dog shows on tv. It seems like they want the terriers to show more personality than other groups...need to show the "terrier qualities." I think a lot of trainers use treats to distract the dogs and keep them focused on them. I think a big part is showing that you have control of the dog. JMO...

Just like in a human beauty pageant, I think the dogs have to have the poses they are looking for and the correct "gait" when they are circling around the ring. They expect the dogs to be well-behaved.

What dog show is it? Just a local one? Or like a Eukanuba Dog Show or Something? I'd LOVE to do one with Daisy, but she is deathly afraid of other people, and dogs.... So that is a problem. But that's really cool that you get to do that, and I know you will have a fantastic time! It looks so fun!

Is it a UKC or AKC show? there is a BIG DIFFERENCE! This is from my experiences with both kinds of shows.

UKC shows are a lot more relaxed. Dog owners or the breeder shows the dog. People are willing to just sit and talk to you. The judges are happy to take time to talk to you and teach you about your breed. It is fun.

AKC show are tense and professional handlers do most of the showing. It seems like life or death for some of these. There are a few owners and breeders that show, but the handlers dominate the field. The handlers win too. You are discouraged from talking to the judge after you show. Judges are more hurried and have much more to do.

ANYTHING WORTH DOING IS WORTH OVERDOING Mom of eight, only three left at home! Pack leader to ten ratties: Maggie, Mysty, Berry, Simon, Ceecee and five puppies, Star,Sari, Bluebelle, Double stuf, and Snortie. As well as Ginger the Border Collie and a herd of turkeys!

How old is the dog? At 6 months to 1 year they will be in the puppy class.

1 to 2 Jr Class and over 2 the Sr Class.

3-6 months is the NLC Class.

In all classes they will expect the dog to be under control. Showing in UKC they will be looking at structure, temperment and if the dog can do the job he was bred for.  You will be asked to show the dogs bite. The judge will put his hands on your dog.

Cut their nails! Just give them a wipe down with a baby wipe. No grooming aids are allowed in UKC. So make sure when you give them a bath that the shampoo does not smell.

Just scope out the rattie folks and go over and meet them. That's how we got started.

Have fun!

We only have one that size in the UKC and it's in June the same week as Fathers Day. It's in Kalamazoo MI.  It's fun. This year we will have Dock Jumping as a sporting event.

Spudz won the first place in the terrier male competition at the dog show! It was really fun and he did really well. I am looking into showing him more and was wondering how I start. I live in riverside ca and looked online to see if there were any shows I could start off with. Do you have any information? Spudz does belong to the UKC, and you mentioned that in June is going to be one, where about's that at? I appreciate you reply...

I'm assuming this was a conformation show? Congratulations!
