I want to teach Pepper to stay on the property, but in order to take her for a walk, I have to take her down the side of the street and across a busy street. Any ideas? I know dogs can learn a scent trail, but I can't carry her the whole way. I think she's too smart for that anyway and would pick up on visual cues anyway. Help keep her safe!

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

it pretty easy really I traind all 6 pups to stay in there yard! I was lucky I live'd in a court but a busy one! I let them have the run of the yard but the minute they put a toe in the raod I called them and gave them a treat if they ignore me I would get up and scold them,(they hate that) All I would have to do is GO, AH HA! and they would back up! pretty soon the got it I always use the same tone and word they figued it out pretty quick!this was a hard lesson cause if there are kids play'n they get distracted!! it hard to listen to JUST MOM!But If I had to get up from the porch and scold one they get so hurt...pretty soon all I had to to is shake the treat jar and all would come from where ever they were and come to me so they go to stay close so as not to miss the treats!

Personally, in my opinion, I'm not sure that this can be done with 100% effectiveness. At least not to the point where she could be trusted to stay within her property without you there to make sure she didn't venture onto the road or further away, potentially resulting in a disastrous situation.

You could use a long line that allows her to get far enough away from you where she could attempt to get out onto the sidewalk or street, and offer her a correction when she gets too close, and then a quick reward for coming back into the yard, but again, I'm not sure if this will work really well. I don't think there's anyway to safely "practice" this without the risk of her getting hit by a car, or taking off and getting out of your sight.

Terriers, even the most well-trained and obedient ones, ALWAYS, in my opinion, run the risk of seeing something (squirrel, rabbit, cat, etc.) and want it very badly, and will focus on it with such intent that they ignore everything else but "the hunt". Most of them are, by their very nature, EXTREMELY prey-driven.

well what you say is true! but as I was training 5 at the same time I HAD toget them to LISTEN to me! And as I said I was lucky! my court was quiet most of the time..not to may cars but they did learn to listen for my voice like there MOM! it worked kind of the same way just as mom would scold them for not being in ear -shot that is how I trained them and now even if they get out of my site, they will listen and come running even if there is a strange dog or cat or squarl they won't budge! I did this BECAUSE I fostered a couple that WOULDNT listen and run out the door---down the street! And nobody could catch 'um,its was nice too, when we moving across county I could tak them on walks as a pack(like Cesar Milan does!)And never worry if one would get off his coller or lead. it was neat to watch them stay together
