I can't for the life of me get this puppy to like the leash.  Everytime I put it on him he starts to run like a lunatic with it on.  How do I get him use to it?  I'm afraid he's going to break his neck.

Although I did put a collar on my ten week old puppy, I plan to use a harness for walks as they seem to fight that less. Also, with these tiny dogs, a harness is safer cause it would be very easy to injure their little necks.

That's my baby girl, Bijou! She's a Toy Rat Terrier.

I've always had big dogs as well. There's a bit of a learning curve with these tiny ones isn't there.

yes, I agree about the harness. It makes a difference. My dogs still arent fond of the leash, but we are working on that. I know others have good advice on this subject and you can scan this forum and will prob find some info on how to leash train. I know I had this question at one point.

 (1)  How old is your puppy (2)  Is your pup already used to a collar?

He's about 11 weeks old, and just had a collar put on for the first time this week.

I started by putting the leash on while they were in the house for short periods of time (5 minutes or so) and let them drag it around and get used to the weight of the leash.

Puppies do not like strange, new things. The collar will probably cause quite a trauma! Since pups cannot express their displeasure, or take their "hands" and try to remove it, they will scratch at it. This does not mean it "itches" - it just means it feels strange and somewhat uncomfortable.

Puppies dislike a leash more than they do the collar. When you first attach the leash to puppy’s collar, let him drag it around for a little while (supervised, of course!). Next, pick up the end and let the puppy feel the resistance. You may experience anything at this point - from crying to twisting the neck, bucking, pawing, - some of the more resistant pups may actually urinate or defecate. Just remain calm and hold the leash. When the pup has calmed, you can either try the next step, or end the "lesson". During this time, feel free to give your puppy treats to refocus him on something positive.

After the "big fight" is over, you can attempt to encourage the pup to follow you with gentle tugs and a lot of "good dog" vocal encouragement. With very resistant pups, some delicious treats (soft, moist, TINY bits) can be great motivation. You should be upbeat and positive with the pup and there should be a lot of praise for correct behavior (i.e. walking with you while on the leash).

Bijou scratched her collar so much the first week that I had to replace it with a new one as it was shredded from all the pawing.

I still plan to use a harness rather than attaching a leash to the collar. I've found this website where you can order these great custom harnesses , http://www.chloescustomharness.com/

ok, so I got a harness... and it took me 15 minutes to figure out how to put the thing on Brutus... lol.  My husband found it very amusing.  The pup of course did not like it one bit, he kept managing to get his bottom jaw hooked into the front part of it, so I'm thinking it wasn't tight enough.  Anyway, I'll start with letting him wear it for a bit each day, then try putting a leash on it.

Cody did not want to walk on a leash forever. He would just sit there and I had to pull him. He finally got used to it and does fine now.

I never use harnesses for training... but hey... if it works for you then great! I'm in favor of whatever works! Bailey chews them up the few times I've tried to put them on him.

I'm now using a harness with my puppy Choxie though she is older, 5 months. We got her about a month ago. I started with short walks with just a regular collar and she would plant her butt down and no matter how I tried I couldn't get her to budge. Using the harness lets me move her body without pulling on her neck. The downside is when we are on a walk she kinda pulls her whole body to the right. We just took our first "official" long walk today. I find the harness allows more control than a regular collar and I don't feel so bad about pulling her because the chest is a stronger part of her body versus her tiny neck. I would reccomend it for the beginning until you establish who is the leader and when his/her form gets better you could probably switch over to a regular collar.

YEAH   We went on our first walk around the block (about 3/4 mile).  Brutus loves his big huge adopted mom and he will follow her anywhere.  So I got KC ready first, then hooked up Brutus' harness and leash and off we went.  He was so into following her that he forgot he even had the thing on.
