Hello fellow Rattiers,
Some of you may recall that I have recently added a rt to my household.
He is the cutest, and quite a charmer. 9 weeks old.
I know that he is a dominate alpha male.
He bites every chance he gets.
I hold his mouth and say no bite and that stops him for a while.
He does not bite to hurt I dont think but those sharp little teeth
sting.

Will he just grow out of this?

Lucy used to bite a lot when she was tiny. For instance if you walked past her she would bite your pant leg, shoe or shoelace. Maybe try spraying him with a water bottle when he does it. Or spray the things he's biting with bitter apple. Lucy grew out of the nipping thing. It quite possibly might just be a puppy thing. I'm sure someone else on here will have some good advice for you.

He will (should) grow out of it, but you can help him along by not encouraging it. Make sure when he's biting, he's biting on something you've given him to chew on and not your fingers, toes or other body part. If he's discouraged at an early age, he's less likely to develop a behavior issue later on when he gets older!

I read something recently (can't remember where) that puppies usually learn from each other about biting, that it can hurt and not to do it to much.  Sometimes they don't learn as fast as others or are taken from their siblings to fast..  I'm not sure about all this, just something I read somewhere...  Anyway, they said that when the puppy does it to yelp and turn away.  This person said that if your puppy was playing with a sibling that this is what the sibling would do.  I'm sure you would have to make sure its not a "playful" kind of yelp as you wouldn't want your puppy to think its "fun"...  I'm having sorta the same problem with Bohda, when she is excited and playing she will try and chew on anyone or anything..  I started AWWWW' ing it today and turning my back on her and so far it has stopped her...for a few minutes anyway..lol... We also tell her NO in a firm voice, offer her a toy, playing with it with her and than telling her how wonderful she is...you know... "good girl, get your TOY, ohh good girl, get that toy"...LOL..

Good Luck

If he is very dominate you may want to hold him on his back when you watch TV or just sitting holding him. It is a submissive position and if he is in it enough he will get the idea that you are the alpha not him. We have used this with some success with the bitches. We gently held them on their backs when we were watching TV or videos they got attention and petting and they were in submissive position. It has made a big difference in Berry's attitude and is slowly changing Choklit's. Neither of my boys is dominate so I don't have a problem there.

ANYTHING WORTH DOING IS WORTH OVERDOING Mom of eight, only three left at home! Pack leader to ten ratties: Maggie, Mysty, Berry, Simon, Ceecee and five puppies, Star,Sari, Bluebelle, Double stuf, and Snortie. As well as Ginger the Border Collie and a herd of turkeys!

That is amazing.
Before I read this post I watched a video with him.
He was very docile for about 15 minutes with the occational nip
at my arm. Then it was like he remembered he was alpha and
started to squirm. Then I put him back in his x pen.
I will keep trying to sit quietly with him.
Thanks.
