Cody will not quit getting into the bathroom trash. He pulls toliet paper, empty toliet paper rolls, femine products, etc. out of the trash. I have caught him doing it and yelled at him and he just hunkers down and knows he is in trouble but he keeps doing it. Does anyone have any advice other than getting a trash can with a lid on it? I want him to learn to stop digging in the trash so I can take him to friends house without getting embarrassed because he digs in their trash.

Only advice is 1. can with a lid 2. put it in a cabinet or 3. put it up high. Sorry I'm not more help. But unless you keep the door shut or the garbage hidden he is bound to do it.....darn terriers!! lol

It's not just terriers. Pepper did it until we got a can with a lid. My parents have an English Setter that did the same thing. She would even go through the kitchen trash just to pull the tissues out. All you can really do is what Sarah said above. I've never had a dog that stuck her head in the trash when there's a lid on it. The science of it is that they are drawn to things that smell like their "pack." I would not worry too much about a friend's house. It's the same reason they chew your shoes, socks, undies, etc. at home. They don't go for other's things, just yours.

Thanks for the advice. I think I will go get a trash can with a lid.

Even our 10 year old, Roxy, will every once in a blue moon decide to play shredder with the bathroom waste can. I mostly keep the doors closed and she mostly isn't into that in her maturity (snort) but every so often....

Gosh I'm glad Cody isn't the only dog that digs in the trash. Right now I have been keeping the door closed but don't always remember to keep it closed. Thanks for everyone's help. I think I will probalby just go get one of those cute little trash cans with a lid on it.

Skipper is our trash digger....they can't get to the tall kitchen garbage can (I've got the shortie ratties) but he'll get in the bathroom trash sometimes when we aren't home. We put a baby gate up so they can't get in that area at all.

Now Skipper is a laundry thief....he's always digging out my blouses and panties and carrying them around....weird little nutcase.

We don't have that problem. Kitchen trash in cabinet and they don't bother with other baskets. We did have a problem with Dexter, the husky mix who died in May. About 3 years before he died, I came home from work to discover the freezer (side by side) door was open with a puddle of water (melted ice) on the floor and everything completely thawed. Nothing on the floor so didn't know what happened. A few days later - same thing only this time there was a wrapper in the other room. I rigged up a thick rope around the unit and tied it off the next day when we left for work. Came home and entire frig was clear across the room with plug pulled out! Dexter was 7 years old when this started and weighing about 80 lbs. Our kitchen is wide open so I had to install gates to keep the dogs out of there when we weren't home!

My girls are horrible about tissues in the trash. Rosie was the first dog to do this, when she was a pup, and she will still do it once in a great while. But the ratties are the worst...they will even take an (unused) paper napkin off the coffee table just to rip it up if it's left there. Crazy ratties!

ABSOLUTELY correct -- it's not just terriers! LOL
Is it possible to leave your bathroom door closed? If not... get a wastebasket with a lid, or else sprinkle tabasco sauce on some of the items in the trash can that usually attracts your dog.

We just always keep our bathroom door shut. But we do forget from time to time and Toby lets us know...usually by shredding a roll of TP. But we are looking for the perfect trash can witha lid for our bathroom as well. We already had to do that in the Kitchen because he got into it too many times and figured out that is was good tasting stuff. Good luck.

I saw some little bathroom trash cans with lids on them at Target. That's is what I plan to go get and I'm also going to try putting tabasco sauce in the trash. I forgot to close the bathroom door last night and he had trash dug this morning!

My mother and I would spray the top of the trash with bleach.I know this could be bad if they ate it, so we watched very carefully. But they wouldn't go near of it cause of the smell. We did it first with just a small spray to see if they stayed away. Then a little more the next time. Now we don't have to use any now. And it's been maybe a few months since they have even bothered the trash.

Oh, I almost forgot. Black pepper too. When our older Terrier mix first started doing it, we loaded it down with black pepper. My mamaw said it would it help, and only make them sneeze. It did help. And he did sneeze.

Hmmmm the dog gets in the wastecans unless the humans close the doors. The humans forget to close the doors. Who needs the training?

I have a lidded wastecan in one bathroom where the girls have access. My girls aren't allowed down in the ends of the house where the bedrooms and other two bathrooms are. Those doors are always shut, so not a problem.

Yep, we have a couple of shredders around this house too....pretty common.....my RT and non RT both will shred Kleenex' any time they get a chance. So I keep bathroom trash under the sinks in the cupboards and kitchen trash has a lid....so we rarely have this problem....but a lidded can should help solve the issue.....

Joleigh wouldnt do this to the trashcan in the bathroom but she did it to any that had food in them.. i couldnt figure out how to get her to stop but finally i spent about 2 hours hiding behind a wall and everytime she went near it i would make a high pitched noise, (i was determined NOT to have to clean up trash when I come home every day) amazingly, she hasn't done it since. i expected to have to do tht for a few days but just doing it that day worked (for now!)
