hi all,

my little guy seems to be a bit sick at the moment--he's drinking and peeing a lot. i took him to the vet yesterday and we're waiting on test results. he's peed in the house a few times because he's been drinking so much (something he's never done before), so tonight i put a pee pad down as i'm out at work and he'll be alone for a while.

my question is: will he know to go on the pad? he's not pad-trained as far as i know (i adopted him a year ago). i know the pads smell as if a dog shoould pee on them and i know they prefer to go on absorbent things. what do you think? and if he doesn't go on them how do i train him to do so? oh, i also put it in an out-of-the-way place, so he doesn't feel like he's soiling the "den." when he peed in the house a few days ago he went in an area he doesn't spend a lot of time in (my bedroom rug!)

thanks in advance for any help!

- ruth

(i'll post this in both "health" and "training" i think.)

I know if your train them to use the pee pads when they are still puppies they will still use them when they are grown up. Prince is almost 14 months and he knows to use a pee pad. But sometimes he forgets and will also go into the bedroom and pee.

I keep a pee pad at the back door, just in case I do not get up fast enough in the am to let them out. I take ambien to sleep, so sometimes it takes me a minute to get up...They go on it most of the time, or in my bathroom floor...

I've never trained a pup to use a piddle pad by merely leaving them alone with it. Do you crate your pup? Of course, if he's sick, that probably would be wise... but once he's better I would suggest it. It will be a great training aid. I wouldn't worry too much about it until he gets better. The pads are scented with something to attract the dogs, but most pups when left alone with them, merely chew them up. LOL
I hope your little guy gets better soon!

I keep a towel by the door, weighted down on both ends by heavy boxes (with a plastic mat underneath). Hardy is allowed to pee and poop there. I like him to have that freedom, even though i have to wash the towel.

Nibbler tained himself to use them. Never had a problem w/ Fry he'd just hold it. How did everything go when u got home?

Mayfly trained herself, too. When we brought her home I showed her the pee pad the first time she acted like she wanted to potty.....and the rest is history. That dog has never gone anywhere else in the house except on the pad. Now, it took a long time to convince her to potty outside but hitting the pad inside was never a problem.

Thank you all so much for the responses. When I got home that night he had not used the pad. I have since been putting it down every time I go out just in case (he's still drinking a lot--tests say it's nothing though) and he has never used it. I don't think he really knows what it's for, but I also think he just sleeps all the time when I'm out and so does not really need to pee until I come home and he wakes up. Thanks again!
