Well today we had the door open for a second and miss pumpkin (aka "legs" went a runnin. She darted out the front door to the complex pool and didn't listen to a word we said. Then, as tim and i were begging and pleading with her, amlet decided to join her out there and he went running. Amlet is not like that...or so I thought. He didn't act as giddy though and his purpose was just to pee on the bushes. Anyway, I grabbed a treat bag and we got them both to come to us after a few minutes of chasing. This was it. We got inside and I went directly to petsmart to talk about training classes. I signed them both up starting next saturday for beginner classes where they will learn basic obedience and how to listen. They know some basic commands but what they need is to learn that I am boss. The trainer talked about the classes and I feel for the price I am paying (198 for both dogs) it will be well worth it. They've needed this, and I just don't understand why I put it off. This should have been done months ago.

I know many of you have utilized the petsmart training classes, so how are they? Will I have more control over them after this? Will they come when called as long as I follow the trainers instruction and advice?

That's funny. Next time they get out, try just sitting down on the ground. Many times they are looking to play tag. If you don't run after them, they should run back to get your attention. Although, training would be the best or a fenced yard.

I have never gone to the ones at petsmart but I have seen some when Ive been shopping there. Our local humane society has an amazing trainer that uses one of thier rooms for classes and if you adopt there training classes are 15% off. Her obedience classes are only $70 for a six week course. It is the best priced in our area.

Jamie... actually Bill is correct. If your dog runs away and won't return, sometimes sitting on the ground or actually running in the opposite direction will get their attention. If you chase the dog, the dog thinks it's a game "Wow! This is fun! I love playing chase!"

Good for you for getting your dogs enrolled in an obedience class. What happened to you is a classic example of why the recall command should be the priority command a dog learns. Having good recall on your dog can save your dog's life.

Keep us posted on how things go, ok? I'm glad nothing tragic happened to your furkids while they were running amuck!

We have a 12 week old rattie and we just started last week with the training classes at Petsmart. So far so good. We have tried on our own to train him the commands...but we are having some problems in other areas and thats why we decided to take the puppy classes. Good luck to you and training!!!

So glad you got everyone back safely! Another vote for sitting or moving the OPPOSITE direction away from them (I know, it feels anti intuitive). Have 2 out is worse than just one as they can decide to run off together whereas one will often feel the loss of "the pack".

The first thing I teach fosters that come in here (and my guys have all been taught) is a wait at the door command. I want to be able to go in and out without fear of a little dog rushing out!

Jamie, glad it all ended well. And good for you to take the training classes. I used PetSmart too. Just remember, they don't train your dog, they train you to train your dog. I know that sounds odd, but it is just that. I learned alot going there.

i agree with you all about the being calm and just staying put thing. however, i freaked out! i was just so scared. pumpkin is so small, and she has got legs for running. we just didn't know what to do. once before she got out on accident and that is what we did...we just sort of calmly said "pumpkin come here now" and it worked for the most part.

i'm really excited for the classes. i really need to learn how to get their concentration. amlet is so intelligent, so he is easy to train, but he's still not as obedient as he needs to be to be safe.
pumpkin is the most loving dog on earth but she has got a bobble head on her shoulders (thats what i call it, lol). She's in space sometimes. We REALLY need help with her.
