He is 18 months old - we have had him almost 1 month - he was supposodly already housebroken - the previous owner said he never had an accident in the house or his crate - they did however, keep him in the garage for the most part - he had a recliner out there that was his - so perhaps he pooped in the garage, I don't know.

We take him outside ALL the time - he doesn't ever pee in the house - but he just keeps going inside - at least once a day.

We tell him "no" and take him outside and reinforce poop outside - to no avail.  He does poop outside too - I just don't know why he is doing this.

He has gotten more and more affectionate - snuggled in bed with me and my 5 year old all morning - he usually wakes up around 7 a.m. and the kids walk him outside for him to potty, and they feed him - then I let him out again - he will usually snuggle for several hours if you let him.

He is also a major licker!! You have to keep telling him no over and over and moving his head away from your face.

He was neutered last week - healed great - but he was doing this behavior even prior to that.

We do love the little guy, but this pooping thing is getting really tiresome.....

Please help!!

Julie

What kind of food is he eating? A higher quality food will make him poop less.
Also, does he do it at a certain time? Maybe you can take him out about that time and see if he'll go outside.
Or try puppy pads. We leave them for Nibbler when we are at work or asleep and he uses them every time. (His aim is just a little off, but all four feet are on the pad, so in his head so his the pee lol)

aww...sounds like such a sweetie!
I have found with mine that they pee right away, but I have to walk around for a bit before they poop... maybe 2-3 minutes. I have learned their schedule over itme. Like if they eat, they will need to poop 30 minutes later or 1 hour later or whatever. I think paying close attention to when the puppy eats and being aware that he will need to go out 30 minutes later and walk him around and learn his "signals" My Toa literally runs in tiny circles til the poop is coming out! LOL.....Trixi just takes her leash as far away as possible and looks for the PERFECT SPOT.
It took a while to get used to but once I knew their signals and their schedule better, its so much easier...I am even impressed with myself! LOL
HOpe this is a little helpful! Look forward to learning more about you and you baby....we also LOVE pics...whats his name by the way?

What is he eating and are you free feeding or is he on a schedule?

His name is Rowdy - I have posted several times, he is not great about getting his picture taken, I haven't tried in a while though.

We feed him on a schedule - breakfast, lunch and dinner about 1/3 -1/2 cup each time - I will have to double check the brand - his previous pwner fed him purina or something, but we bought some pricey pet food that was all natural.

If we do walk around and wait, and wait - he will sometimes go - he always goes poop on walks. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to when - or where in the house he goes - but always on the carpet!!

yes they seem to prefer carpet for their "accidents"

I would have a couple suggestions based on what you just said.

I would, at 18 months, suggest feeding him his recommended daily amount once a day. Maybe in the early evening around your dinner time.

If you can remember the name of the food it would be helpful (or post it later). You'd be surprised at the number of foods that are supposed to be "better quality" and have a price tag to match, but that aren't at all. If it would turn out to have a lot of grain or other unnecessary fillers, that may be causing him to go more often and in larger amounts.

I would also suggest getting a light weight leash or cord to keep on him in the house, so that he must stay within someone's eyesight at ALL times. If he isn't going to be in someone's eyesight, he should be crated. It's absolutely imperative to the housetraining process that he be corrected immediately when he starts to squat and taken outside. The correction only need to be a firm, stern (not loud) ACK or NO. Pick him up and saying "potty outside" take him to your preferred spot for him to go. As soon as he goes outside -- each and every time -- you (or whoever's with him, and someone should always be right there with him until he gets it) must offer IMMEDIATE praise that he has done his business outside. These ratties learn very quickly and if you can use these methods to immediately correct his misbehavior and praise his good behavior, he WILL get it, I promise.

It's also going to be very important that you have any and all areas where he has or might have gone cleaned thoroughly with a product that will completely remove any scent so that he is not continually attracted to those areas.
