 Rattitude Problem

I guess Bob's head must be smaller than his neck because he has learned how to slip out of his collar. When he is on leash, if he doesn't want to follow your lead, he will put on the brakes and let the collar slip off of his head. Luckily, he will come when called or stop/stay when told...so far at least. Should I try to break him of this habit or should I get a harness, or both? |

I had the same problem with my first Rat, Bandit. I got a harness because it's such a helpless feeling when you're out and they slip the collar and take off!!

| It terrified me the first time he did it. My brave protector got scared when a car honked as it went by and he decided to head for home without me. I called him and he finally stopped before he got to the street corner. I think I will search the old posts for harness advice. I know a lot of people use Puppia harnesses. |

| I had a harness for Bob when he was little, just the one with straps, and he figured how to get out of that one. I think I'll try to find a vest-type harness for him this time. |

| What about trying one of the slip type collars they use for greyhounds? Does Bob know you are calling him names? |

| Bob doesn't know I'm calling him a pin head. Please don't tell him! But he does look like his head is too small for his body. |

Hah - encountered that problem the very first time I walked Loco, but then she is a whippet and does have a small head. But then she also slipped out of a harness when she panicked over another dog approaching her. (Long story short when we first got her in 2001 she was terrified of other dogs..no clue why...now she's a social butterfly with others dogs!) I have used the martingale type collars and they're ok but I prefer a good harness. |

| My mom's rattie can get out of a harness faster than a collar. I hope you figure something out for poor Bob. |

Yaz would do the same thing w/ a regular collar. Slam on the brakes and slip it over her head. Scarrrryyyyy!!!!!! We had trouble finding harnesses to fit her odd little rattie body. We found one at Walmart that adjusts w/ a drawstring type thing that fits well but she can still get out of it. Now we use a nylon choke type collar. We love it! It is easy on/off for quick trips to go potty and has made walking a breeze. She used to pull like crazy because she wanted to run so bad. But now w/ the collar and "Dog Whisperer" walking tips she satys right at our side w/ slack on the leash! Awesome |

My ratties also have tiny heads! And I cant say enough..USE A HARNESS AT ALL TIMES! a few days before this past christmas my hubby took Clyde out to use the bathroom. We live in the city and have to cross a major road to get to the nearest grass. Clyde being as smart as he is knows the route and gets anxious to get home as he HATES being outside in the cold. well on this particular day -we dont know if he did it on purpose. his little head wiggled right out of his collar and he dashed into the road he almost made it across but was clipped by the bumper on a miny van We where very very lucky because he escaped only with a minor bruise on his little leg But since then we dont take chances!! You never know with their little heads and necks what could happen ;( |
