Things have been going pretty good here with Corona. Im really taking it slow though because she is really hyper. She understands sit, but she will at this moment only do it for a treat, or if she thinks I have a treat. But the problem is if I dont give her the treat RIGHT away she will leap at me like "where's that treat, I sat, give it to me!" I can't get her to sit for more than a couple of seconds. Any ideas of how to get her to concentrate and maybe teach her the sit/stay command? Also I got a little excited when she started sitting that I was working on "shake", she does shake but it's not as good of a shake as I hope it to be one day lol. Im going to continue looking through the training section, but any quick advice would be great! :0) |

Aubers, are you clicker training with her or just using positive reinforcement with the treats?
I have always clicker trained and clicked at the end after the release word but here is a general idea:
Have your dog sit in front of you.
Place your palm near his face for emphasis and give the stay command. This looks exactly the same as if you were signaling for another person to “stop” – but instead you say the word “stay”.
At this stage your dog hasn’t learned anything to do with the stay technique, but once you give the signal, wait and see how long he stays in its current position. Once the dog has stayed in his current position for a few seconds, click and reward him.
Repeat step 4 about 5 times but wait longer each time before praising your dog. You may want to start with two seconds and gradually increase up until ten seconds.
If your dog moves, don’t praise your dog or give him a treat. After a few attempts, your dog should start to realize that while it’s not moving that he gets a treat.

Work with her on a leash.... ALL training should be done on lead until the dog "gets it". That way you can maintain control of her. Make sure she's responding totally to one command before trying to teach another one. Have her on the leash... say "SIT". You can even reach down and hold the collar... and put gentle pressure to make her sit, thereby eliminating the opportunity for her to jump up. Then while holding her gently in the sit position by the collar... give her the treat. This will also teach her not to come up immediately after she has taken the treat. You want her to remain in the sit position until after you have given her the release command. I use "ok" for the release command. I hope this helps you... |

Thank you both. Hopefully the leash will help. I know alot of people recommend it but I wont lie I have yet to try it. But if it works for others I will def have to use it, it may seem dumb but I feel weird having her on a leash in the house Maybe Im the one who needs training lol
Also it's nice to see you back Nora. |

I have tried to use the leash on mine in the house, but they get way to excited thinking they are going for a walk LOL, it was hard to get them to focus on task at hand, they kept running to the door!! I have had better luck with the clicker, but that is just me personally. Good Luck Aubers!! |

What works for one may not work for another, for sure... I do 85% of my training outside if at all possible... for several reasons. (1) I have three other dogs, and it is impossible to train one dog when you have three others hovering around. (2) It's always good to train on different surfaces, in different environments... other than what the dog is normally used to. The house is your dog's territory and... depending on the dog of course... he/she may be more reluctant to be responsive because of "habits" and "behaviors" already engrained in that familiar environment. (3) I think any trainer you talk to will recommend all training be done on lead until the behavior you are seeking is solid. and Aubrey... thank you! |

Sweet, I am going to email them soon and find out if they have picked a day yet in May. It always is a lot of fun!! I will keep you posted. I have only clicker trained with my dogs so outside of that anything I know is what I read. I liked clicker training, my dogs seemed to pick it up really quick. I am going to send you an PM soon with the email I sent and their information and map so you can see., |

When I did Obedience Training with Button, the instructor asked us to not use treats or toys in class. She said we needed to get our dogs to be willing to perform for his US (particularly in the case of a life-threatening situations), and not just for a treat. She said treats and toy squeaks at the END of class were OK and even encouraged. A few minutes of Button's favorite game (soccer kickball) at the end of a 20 minute "lesson" was the best reward. Lots of excited "GOOD LESSON" verbal praise got her all excited, too. So that's how I've done it ever since.
On walks, treats for LEAVE IT, SIT, DOWN, STAY are random now, so Button is still willing to perform not just for a treat, because maybe this is the magic time the treat will be forthcoming! She'll intermittently cranks that head around to watch my hand, too. LOL |
