Ok Apollo gets the "come" part. But then he knows I have a treat and then follows me like "I'm gonna follow you until I get another treat." I don't give him a treat everytime he "comes". So how do I get him to "wonder" around again after i give him a treat so I can call him back? |

That would probably be Max. He loves food so much. |

Yay, Apollo! Mario will follow me around too. Just be patient... something will get his attention and he'll wander off. Keep it up! Great job!! Oh, I've been trying to call you all day but I keep getting interrupted. (could have something to do with skin and fur kids!) Heading out to do yard work... Keep it up! I'm so proud of Apollo! |

Jolene, sounds like Apollo is a quick learner! You might toss a toy or something in front of him to get his attention. I used to just pick up a rock, or stick, or whatever I found lying on the ground, and show it to Lucy, then toss it out in front of her---she was far too nosey to NOT go check it out! |

Then stop... resume the training later when the "reward" is not so fresh in his mind. Does he have a toy he's obsessive about? (like BAiley's air kong). Apollo seemed to love Bailey's air kong -- did you get him one and reinforce the "obsession" with it? You don't want him to be clingy... you want him to come when called but you don't want a clingy dog (do you?). Because... eventually you'll want to (hopefully) teach your dog to go away from you, which is also a valuable thing to train. In some cases, a toy works better than treats...where you can throw it to the end of the long line... let the dog go get it and then say "come" so the dog will bring it back to you and THEN give the treat reward. Give Apollo a reason to go away from you briefly. As he becomes more and more in tune with the "game"... you will see his confidence grow and his independence grow... but yet he will be very in tune with the commands you give and respond to them! (just read what Paul wrote.... so he and I are in agreement here!) |

Thanks, Shannon and Paul! It's funny but even Emma can't get his attention! I'll definitly try the toy, rock, or stick. Because I'll walk to get away from him then he'll follow me. When I stop he'll sit. Like he wants me to reward him for sitting... something he learned a LONG time ago. If I don't reward him for sitting will he stop sitting? Sorry, I'm making this more complicated aren't I? |

| Don't reward the "sit" if it's not what you asked for.... only reward a behavior that you ask for. Don't reprimand him though... just don't reward it. Divert his attention elsewhere. |

| Ok... I'll do that Nora. Thank you, thank you so much. I haven't gotten the air kong yet. But it will be on my list for this week. |

If I don't reward him for sitting will he stop sitting? Sorry, I'm making this more complicated aren't I? This is probably a good thing to "reward" him for with verbal praise & petting! You dont need to give him a food treat for things that he does on his own, but if it's a GOOD thing, and something you'd like him to continue doing (maybe you don't want him to sit everytime you stop, but personally, I think that's a great thing!) then just really letting him know he's a "GOOD BOY!" will give him a positive feeling about it. The ultimate goal is to phase out the treats for all the commands---but not for a long time, cos he's just now starting his educational journey!
**haha--I see that there is more than one way to look at things, huh? |

When I first got Bailey (or I should say... when he first got me... haha), this little dog had never even had a collar on. He was not leash broken and had NO clue what any kind of toy was. He had no prey drive....or perhaps a better explanation would be that his prey drive had not been developed and encouraged. (all dogs have prey drive.. some more than others). I could not get him interested in any toy... much less in fetching anything.... all this dog did was run around and exert energy in no real "productive" way. It was frustrating. Scott (used to be a training moderator here) recommended working with Bailey with a tennis ball in the hallway of the house. I had never trained that way before... but I tried it and it worked. There was little else to DO in the hallway with me and a tennis ball. I was very animated with him... and the first time he brought the ball back to me, and FLOODED him with treats... over and over and over again. He became obsessed with the tennis ball. So I took the "game" outside... and because I don't have a ton of strength in my arms, I couldn't throw it very far. In the beginning, this was ok because I had him on a long line anyways... but eventually as he became more and more obsessed and I wanted to train him OFF the long line.... I bought an air kong because it has a rope attached and I can throw it farther. He became obsessed with the air kong, and that is now "HIS" obsession. He will work for the air kong better than he will work for treats, and this obsession with the toy is now being used in our agility training, but won't go into that here. The key is finding... and developing... SOMEthing that your dog will do ANYthing for... whether it be a toy, a particular type of treat... even a short ride in the car works sometimes as a reward. These are just suggestions... they worked for me with Bailey... might not work for all dogs, but certainly worth a try! |

| Thanks Paul. I actually DO like the fact that he sits. And even that when he does sit he's attention is on me and not the next thing he can chase. I did do the "GOOD BOY" when he sat beside me because I personally think that, that is good too! I'll keep everyone updated and thanks again for all ya'll's help! xoxoxoxo |

You're doing great Jolene!! You & Apollo (Emma) keep up the good work.
Nora - Its funny how Bailey is so obsessed with his kong when he didn't even play/fetch when you first got him. As you know, Max doesn't play but after a lot of work, he will bring the kitty for a food treat reward. |

Thanks Jenny! It's so funny because when I call Emma she's like "Um, yeah, that's me!" And she comes running ( sometimes taking the "opps my head is going this way... better follow it" detour) but she eventually makes it! |
