We just got back after Mic's first day of recall training!!! Yes, we got a line, but it's just a temp until the real leash gets here Anyway, Mic did... ok... He just has some weird issue about going off on his own so I didn't get to call him back to me as much as I liked. I had Kevin go with me because I thought this might happen. For some reason whenever we are outside and Mic is on his own (he thought he was off leash with that long line) he becomes afraid of everything! I just don't get that, but it is like he won't leave our sides. Even with his favorite toy, he wouldn't run to get it... Is it possible he's afraid of being off leash?
So what we did was I held the line, and Kevin would walk away and then call Mic to come with him. Then when they were doing their own thing, I would say "Mic come". The first time he ignored me completely, but the second time I called him he came waltzing on over and got his treat! Then we would do the whole thing over, Kevin would walk away, and well you get it... But the second time I said "Mic come" man he came running at me soooo fast! I thought he was going to plow into me!! Everytime after that he was great! Came every time. He already does this with Kevin, no treats needed but I blame that on him being home all the time with him.
I think if he ever gets over his weird fear of being off leash I will have a better chance to train with him when he is really preoccupied. But I'm going to keep it up and hopefully things will get better. I just didn't feel like he was distracted enough, his attention was constantly on me and Kevin.

Great job!!! Hey, that' okay! Nora told me to start slowly then build up with more distractions. You guys did great. Just make sure you reel him in when you call him when he doesn't want to. Don't give him the chance to get his own way. Just keep doing that for a few days. Mic sounds like Mario..timid and easily scared. This will help him have more confidence too. (OH, would you just listen to me giving out training advice?? LOL) Ya did good!!! |

Do you think his eye condition affects his vision some? Could be why he sticks close?
Good job Mic! |

ya know, after that first time I didn't even get a chance to give a tug on the line. He just comes so fast! I think he's going to sleep good tonight just from running to me
I didn't think of his eyes as a reason for him sticking so close... I wonder if that could be it. I mean, the vet said his vision is fine, but when he's out in the sun they fog up pretty quickly and you can tell he's seeing in blur vision. So I bet that couldn't help huh. I mean, everytime he's been off leash was during the day, when the sun was out. And even today the sun was still out, just starting to set when we were. Looking at his eyes now I can tell he needs his drops though. I think I'm going to try bringing him out after dark when I know his eyes are clear and put him on the long line and see how he does.
I just gotta say I love the long line. I feel like he can run at full speed without dragging me along |

Good point on his eyes... I love the long line too! Mario doesn't need me to pull on the line anymore. Although, when we trained today, a cat was laying in a yard and Mario was trying his best to go see him. I called him and he wouldn't come. I was ready to pull him to me. After that, despite the cat, he came. I made sure he got extra treats for that .... big distraction!! |

ooohhh a cat! That's a big distraction!! Good by Mario!! He is Mic's new mentor His big distraction would be his mortal enemy... the pug. I just hope we don't come across that obstacle for awhile yet!! |

OOOOH, that's right!! Evil pug... bad doggie!!
I would try very hard to do training when you know evil pug won't be out. Later, after Mic has done recall many times, would be good to try it then.
Please note I love ALL doggies... just trying to be funny saying 'evil pug'... |
