Rattie

Hello everybody! I am so glad I found this site, I was ready to cry when I stubbled upon this. My rattie is named Dally. My fiance bought her for me almost 2 years ago. I have loved her from the start. As it stands right now, I live at home with my parents. Until this spring when I will be buying a house.
My mother & I have another dog too, Scruffy. He is a terrier mix. Now Dally is well socalized, has been since she first came to my home. My mother babysits, and the dogs do wonderful with the children. But for the past few weeks, Dally has been barking and almost biting people as the come in the house, (not the children though.) She is also running out the door every chance she gets. She has a good, sweet nature. I don't know where this is coming from. She will no longer come when she is called. I am afraid something is going to happen to her. We live in the country, so wild animals could always be close by.
After reading some information, I think maybe she gets bored. So today I will buy some new toys, and a new leash for her. She has never been abused. I have had her since she was 6 weeks old. If anyone could offer me some advice I would be so thankful. I am very worried that my mother is going to make me get rid of her before me & my finace can find a house. |

| Welcome~ just wondering if she is spayed?? Maybe this could be the reason she wants to run out of the house? She sounds very sweet and can't wait to see pictures!! |

First welcome to the site We can't wait to see some pictures of her!!! Now... don't cry. If she's been sweet and adorable up to now, I'm sure you can figure out what's going on and what it is that is causing these problems to crop up now. Like Diane, my first thought when I saw your post was to wonder if she's been spayed. You are also correct that she may be bored. Ideally these dogs are fairly high energy and will often "act out" if not given enough release. If you could walk her for 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 late afternoon, I think you will see a big change in her inside energy. Even more ideally, these walks would be at a fairly good place and with her at your side. It doesn't have to be "perfect", but she shouldn't lead or pull you where she wants to go. If you walk her the "right" way, it will help exercise her mind as well as her body! Also, I think it's important to point out that any odd and sudden change in any dogs behavior should be brought to a vet's attention - especially if she hasn't been to see one in a while. Sudden behavior changes can be the result of pain and/or illness, so if it were I, I would eliminate that from the list first thing. Please keep us posted and share more about Dally!!! |

| Good adviced, just wanted to add that you may want to contain her (maybe baby gate or something) to prevent her from getting out the door and also keep her away from people entering. Not as a permenant solution but until you work out what the problem is. |

She has been spayed, less than a year ago. I want to take her for more walks, but right now it is exteremly cold, and she hates the cold. I live in Kentucky, so last week the weather was nice, now it sucks. She seemed better yesterday, but she did sleep alot. She sat by me while I was crocheting, and didn't run toward the door at all. I am wondering what would be the toys for her, she can tear a stuffed animal to pieces in seconds. It's pretty funny really. I thank you all for your responses, and I will keep you updated to her progress. Oh, and pictures soon! |

Glad you checked back in. If you're sure it's nothing physical and likely boredom, walk her when you can (you can get sweaters and even boots for dogs and walking keeps the body temp up fairly well) As for toys, I would try some of the more interactive, busy type toys. For example the ones that you put treats in and it takes the dog a while to get them out. There are also other toys where smaller objects are hidden inside a bigger object and the dogs have to work to get them out (they are stuffed type toys so she may just destroy them, though --- which is by the way a rattie trait that many of us suffer through). Definitely keep us posted and can't wait to see those pics!!! |

| Ooooo, I just remember something that she used to love. The dog treats that sorta look like balls, they have lots of holes. I can not think of the name. Anyway, I used to smoosh peanut butter into the cracks and holes, and Dally and Scruffy would chases and chew those things for hours! Yep, I am going to the store on my way home! |

Hi and welcome to the site!
Like some of the others suggested, anything to physically and mentally stimulate her will help. Also, try indoor fetch. That's what I do with my two when the weather doesn't permit long walks. They have a blast and it wears them out for a bit |
