I am heading over to Borders Book on my lunch and want to get a book on behavior and basic dog understanding. Being very new to the world of training what book do you recommend or did you find helpful in understanding dogs and their behaviors or what would you suggest to a new trainer starting out?

I'm going to stick my neck out and answer for Nora.  I'm about 99% sure that she'd answer this way.  Get "The Other End of the Leash" and/or " For the Love of a Dog."  The author for both is Patricia McConnell.

We've had some discussions on the Training Board about these titles.  Fascinating reading!

Mia -- you are SO right ! (gosh you know me well !)
Another good book to read after that one is "For the love of a dog" by the same author. Both are excellent books. They are NOT training books... they are books which will help you understand our canine friends' behaviors better. Glad you got the book!

Thanks Nora, after this one I will get her other one too. I am finding instead of reading fiction I enjoy these learning books so much more.
