.... says that because Corona is still tiny not to take her outside for long periods of time. So we've been doing a little of both outside and inside potty training. This is because when I take her out I've noticed she would rather run around and sniff then go potty(even when i have her on a small leash she pulls and yanks to run) . Well once 10 minutes hits I bring her in, and often (not always) she ends up going in the house. So I have taken an old clothes basket and put a puppy pad in and if I see her about to pee I put her in it. When I just have a puppy pad down she pee's next to it not on it. Well my questions are... would this be confusing her? And is the vet right about it being too cold or should i try to keep her out longer? My moms yorkies were so easy.... why cant i get it right lol.... i know patience, but i feel like im not doing this right

Patience is something we all have to learn while potty training, Aubrey. Hang in there. Put a little sweater on her so she won't be so cold. Also make sure you always take her out on a leash. Walk around with her. This cold weather affects all of our doggies... I have to pick my dachshunds up and carry them outside !! NOT fun!
Some might disagree with me re: the piddle pads. I think to try to train both is confusing to a puppy. I mean... how are you going to train the pup to know when it's ok to use a piddle pad and when she needs to do her business outside? I've found it's easier to hang in there with one method or the other until they have it down pat... and yes it can be frustrating. Don't get discouraged... remember she's trying to learn too!

Well, I did the potty pad training with Mayfly and when I wanted her to potty outside she WAS confused but others on here have gotten their dogs to successfully do both so I think that depends on the dog.

Question:  can she get into the basket with the pee pad by herself?  Because if you are potty pad training her she needs to be able to get to it.

Another thing you can do is if you take her out and she doesn't go right away then bring her back in and keep her on the lead and right with you....as soon as she starts to move like she wants to potty then take her back out.  Once she goes outside then give her a treat and praise her lots...then she can have her freedom again.  Just an idea.

My dogs do both successfully, Mary Beth. When it's raining I put piddle pads down and my dogs use them. But I didn't train to the piddle pads until they were totally trained to the outside. I never would try to train both at one time.

I agree with the advice about taking her out and bringing her back in if she doesn't do her business. Crate her... try again in about 15 minutes or so... and praise her BIG TIME when it's successful !

I never used "potty pads" as I didn't want Spanky to "learn" it was ok to go inside. The 1st thing we did when we got up in the morning was go outside, I would tell him to go potty, when he did I praised him like crazy & gave him a treat. We would come back inside, I would fix his breakfast & we would go back out after he ate..same process. IF I seen him act like he needed to go (sniffing, turning in circles, etc.) I would get up quick & take him outside & tell him "go potty". After he was a little older & he had that process down then I started training him to hurry hurry which was his cue to go #2. I did this mainly for when it's cold or raining. Now I can take him out, tell him hurry hurry, go potty and he will go both. I have also taught him to ring a bell I have attached on the door knob by fishing line when he needs to go out. He will run to the door, ring the bell & bark to be let out. At 11 weeks he is officially house broken..YEAH!!!

Timing & patience are key to training..take a deep breath & if you are consistant everything will start to fall in to place.  Also, limit the water intake after a certain time at night & don't feed late in the evening, this will help too.

I hope this helps.

THE MEANING OF RESCUE

Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed,
All nicely tucked in my warm new bed.
I'd like to open my baggage
Lest I forget,
There is so much to carry -
So much to regret.
Hmm... Yes there it is, right on the top
Let's unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss,
And there by my leash hides Fear and Shame.
As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave -
I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain.
I loved them, the others, the ones who left me,
But I wasn't good enough - for they didn't want me.
Will you add to my baggage?
Will you help me unpack?
Or will you just look at my things -
And take me right back?
Do you have the time to help me unpack?
To put away my baggage,
To never repack?
I pray that you do - I'm so tired you see,
But I do come with baggage -
Will you still want me?

Mayfly does it both successfully now but for the first year I only had her going on the pads. Then when I wanted to switch to outside it took a LONG time for her to get the idea to go outside....I mean she would refuse to pee outside even after not going potty for 10 hours! I'm sure it was mostly my fault but it sure was grueling.

I'm all about not trying to train two different ways to do one thing..... not until much later. If confusion sets in... everything could backfire.

I taught Bailey to ring a bell when he wanted to go out. That backfired BIG TIME. He learned VERY quickly that when he rang the bell I'd jump up and let him out. It got to the point where HE was deciding when *we* would go out... he was driving me crazy every few minutes going and ringing that stupid bell. I put the bell up... :=(

We are using the bell now. It worked really well. The only thing was that we taught her first that outside was just for potty. We taught her the words outside, potty, and ride (car ride). Once she knew the back door meant potty and she knew to sit for her leash, we started linking the bell in. She rings the bell, sits for her leash, then we go out. It wasn't till about 6 months that we started using the bell. She had to be solid on the potty part first.
