I recently posted about my puppy's aggression/fear for other dogs... and animals; and i was given the advice to take him to training classes and i would love to.  I've been doing things at home and he's been learning well so it would mostly be for the socialization however, my concern is that all he will do the whole time is constantly freak out and snap at other people and the dogs while i'm there and also i've looked into and by what our budget can afford daily classes is out of the question.  weekly a possibility but then by the nxt week any progress made will simply be in vein.  I've looked at dog parks around here and they are all off leash which in my experience has random dogs running up to him like crazy causeing him to go nuts and pee and poop himself and i just can't do that to him i feel awful.  Now if that's really all i can do then i will but if others have any advice.  even if it's breed oriented such as tolerant over another with him, i'm up for it.  my window of puppyness is closeing and i want to do all i can for him.

Petsmart offers classes for $99 and they are weekly for I think 6 weeks. Since the trainer would be there I wouldn't worry about how your puppy will act since they can help you.

If you are doing training at home you can work it into your daily activities. For example, call him for no apparent reason and if he comes by name give him a treat or praise (whichever works best for him). You are the boss! Check out some NILF websites. This stands for Nothing In Life is Free. Make him work for everything. His food, toys, treats, affection, getting his collar and leash on for a walk. They enjoy working for what they get. I find it is harder on the human than the dog LOL.

I hope this helps some.

Paula is right... the classes aren't that much. You will be assigned "homework" for each week so you will be working with him between classes. If you have a good instructor, he/she will show you how to control your dog so he won't snap or be aggressive. Being in a class setting would be good for him... I would do it if I were you.

Also... the dog parks don't mandate that your dog be off lead. They can't do that. You can still go and keep your dog on lead...

Yes, as far as the classes you will still make progress going once a week if you follow through with the homework! You will be working with him all week in between classes with him.

Also, what I do sometimes (I have a one dog that needs to meet more people and another who needs to meet more dogs) is just go and walk in the park near me and when people show interest, whether they have a dog with them or not, I go with it. We don't have a dog park here but I've met a lot of people and it really has helped my dogs over time.

The dog park near us actually does have a rule about dogs being on-leash. It's kind of weird but it says. you should not have it on leash as it sometimes makes the dog more agressive, due to the restriction of the handler. Sounds dumb, but thats what it says.
