I know Corona is still young but I also know that making sure a dog understands their name AND the word come are very important. The problem is whenever I try to call her, using either word she kind of stops, looks and me and runs. Is it because she's still young and JUST wants to play or should I be doing specific things to get her to learn. Any tips would be a great help. Thanks

Nora will be way better at this than me but the IMPORTANT thing is when she does reach you whether by come command or her name, praise her like crazy.

You can put her on a small leash and as you are saying come gently pull her toward you and praise and treat like crazy.

I believe with her name, praise her whenever you say her name and she even looks at you, not comes to you but just looks and acknowledges her name. She will get that over time. Most dogs dont' come when you say their name, that come command and name are two seperate teachings.

The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too

Start with your puppy on a leash. Show her the treats, back up a few steps and say “Come.” When she comes, she should sit automatically in front of you. )If necessary, give her the “Sit” command. Once she is sitting, praise and give her a treat). Repeat this a few times. Now drop the leash and do a few more repetitions. If she is performing well without you holding the leash, start moving further away before saying “Come.” Eventually, run from room to room playing this game. Your dog will learn to come to you when she can’t see you, and will begin to look forward to hearing you command “Come!”

Once she has mastered this game inside, start practicing outside using a long line (15-feet long at least) for safety.

I went through some of that with our dog Lacey (who is almost 2 now) I thought she'd never be trained.  She is a headstrong dog and likes to do things her way.  But with consistency and determination on our part.....and working with her everyday.  She is a very well behaved dog now.  She will come when called and sits, stays.  All that basic stuff.  So keep working with your pup everyday.  It gets frutrating sometimes, but eventually it will happen.

I love reading these "training" threads... I will need some of this advice in May when Brad gets his baby Engish Bull Dog...

I guess I lucked out... Zoey's never had any "training",however she knows "sit", "stay" and for her to come I just call her name. I think she knows the English language! LOL

I've been working with that on Yogi. I have cheese and other treats, and now when I call him, he comes now, and also sits and then lies down using the "down-gesture" with my hand....!!!! Progress! ( LOVES that string cheese stuff!)

Haven't dared the outside and free "come" command yet...am certain that if he sees a cat, another dog, person, fly, bird, squirrel, moving cloud, etc, my "come-training" and string-cheese will be long forgotten! HEH!

I realized I was doing the "come" command wrong. I just got the book The Other End of the Leash from the library... and I read the come comand in the book... I now get why Shadow would always go the other way. I am going to try this when I get home from work today. Yes, I am reading the book at work because it is sooooooo very slow here today and there is nothing else to do... So I can't wait to get home and practice this with shadow. I know he will get this... This book has been invaluable. I will have to buy this book and keep it as it is a keeper to be referenced to at times.

thank you to everyone. I absolutely love this site because everyone is so helpful and someone always understands whats going on.  Sometime I feel a little stupid because it seems so easy when reading everyones tips but I guess it's not always that way huh. This pup is really helping me learn patients lol.

Hi Aubers, nice to meet you. First thing, how old is your puppy?

You do not want to start "leash" training TOO early as the pup will not have the concept to associate everything at once, take it slow & he/she will catch on...patience is the vertue, you will be amazed at just how much difference one week makes. I did put a collar on Spanky at 6 weeks for just 15-20 minutes at a time so he could get use to wearing it. Now that he is 11 weeks old he is FINALLY big enough to wear his harness..all 3 pounds of him LOL.

This is what I did with Spanky... I put some canned food on a baby spoon, let him smell it (works really well when they are a bit hungry, not starving), then called his name & said come, come, come while backing up a couple of steps & if he hesitated I would let him smell it again & repeat the process, it took about 2 days for it to really click (he was just 7 weeks).

At 9 weeks I introduced him to the "dreaded" leash. I never held it or tried to make him walk with me at first. I just snapped it on his collar & let him drag it around the house while I supervised for 10-15 minutes at a time, I did this for about 4 days. The next time I snapped his leash on to his collar I had treats ready & called him to follow me,praising him like crazy when he followed..when he hesitated I reminded him by letting him smell the treat & repeating the process...at 11 weeks he walk right with me on a loose lead, exactly what I wanted him to do.

Remember, NEVER scold your puppy for not understanding..this is a whole new world to him & he is trying to grasp the concept of everything.

Puppies are kinda like children, they need to be patiently taught, reassured & well loved!

I hope this helps.

When you own a Rattie....you KNOW you are in your right mind

THE MEANING OF RESCUE

Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed,
All nicely tucked in my warm new bed.
I'd like to open my baggage
Lest I forget,
There is so much to carry -
So much to regret.
Hmm... Yes there it is, right on the top
Let's unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss,
And there by my leash hides Fear and Shame.
As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave -
I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain.
I loved them, the others, the ones who left me,
But I wasn't good enough - for they didn't want me.
Will you add to my baggage?
Will you help me unpack?
Or will you just look at my things -
And take me right back?
Do you have the time to help me unpack?
To put away my baggage,
To never repack?
I pray that you do - I'm so tired you see,
But I do come with baggage -
Will you still want me?

All great tips! My husband has no patience for a dog that does not come when called....even if she is only 9 weeks old. So, I've started leaving a long thin leash on her when outside so I can grab it when she goes after something. When I'm done with my chores I then practice the "come" command and praise her....so far she doesn't quite get it.....
