No-De keeps jumping up trying to get to or see the hamsters I have on the entertainment unit. I know its a rattie thing to hunt rodents but for petes sake how do I get him to stop jumping? Ive used the water bottle, hes been scolded, you cant see the hamsters from the floor but he knows theyre there and jumps. Hes got toys and bones and we try to distract him with that but he might play with it for a split second and is back to the hamsters. Short of tieing him to the floor lol what can I do?

Can you move them to a different spot? I am not sure if the other things haven't worked. I am sure someone will have more suggestions for you. Can he knock them over or get to them if he does it?

Theyre on the entertainment unit, highest place I have for them. But he still does this (minus the rope and the goofy BF's hand of course)

It may be that he can "smell" them. Ratties have a keen sense of smell. Just keep them up high and hope he doesn't jump any higher. My Shadow will find a way to make a ladder out of things to get to the top of where he wants to go. I literally wish I had my camera now cause he is going through this funny stage now. Just keep the hampsters up high... or maybe put them in another room and close it off from him.

The hamsters would die from being too cold if they were closed in another room for one. The place is weird. Every room is warm with all doors open, but close a door and that room is cold. And the only extra room we have is the dogs room, not gonna work lol
And hope wont stop him from jumping. Thanks though =)

Oh he'll definitely smell them (I can smell rodents in a room so I know they can!) plus he might be able to see them moving around.  That just looks like an accident waiting to happen - the cage, the ceramic santa (?), the prescription bottles (at least that's what they look like) on the shelf....could all come tumbling down.  Maybe Nora will have an answer about teaching him not to jump, it could be that instinct is so strong though that he will always want them.

If you can't move the hamsters then at least don't leave him alone with them.  Sorry, I don't have a better answer.  Well....maybe warm clothes for the hamsters so you could put them in another room???

Can anyone tell me how to get them to stop jumping first thing in the morning as soon as they wake up when you have your good work clothes on?

The great pleasure of a dog is that you may make a fool of yourself with him and not only will he not scold you, but he will make a fool of himself too

I have gotten more shredded pantyhose from them jumping on me when I get home from work! But it's a small price to pay for their greeting.

I would keep using the spray bottle he has to eventually get the idea that his actions are unacceptable.. or you could try pennies in a can I believe.. I persoanlly like the spray bottle method.

He cant reach the top of the entertainment unit. Its jsut the fact that he stands there and jumps and jumps and jumps.

The santa is stuffed, and the pill bottles were for Buddy when he broke his knee, but like I said, he cant reach the top.

wow... looks like he'd give up after awhile. Of course, he has the typical terrier personality... they don't give up easily.

Have you tried covering the hamster cage and see if that will divert his attention? Not suggesting covering it indefinitely... but for short periods of time?

I don't know if I'd tempt fate owning a rat terrier and hamsters in the same house unless the hamsters were sealed off in a room away from the dog. I fear he may find a way to get them one day.
