CoCo and I live about 1/2 of a mile away from a retirement home. While we were on our daily walk, one of the directors from the home stopped me to comment on how beautiful CoCo was. As I started talking more and more to her, we talked about my dad and my family, and she asked me how I would feel about bringing CoCo around some of the residents of the home.

CoCo is pretty well behaved, she has been through obiedience training and I can control her behaviors pretty well. Around other dogs, she is not aggressive she is just a little cautious but friendly.. she has to be the one to initiate interaction. She has never been aggressive toward people, but there are ome people that she will bark at before getting aquainted with them. After that she is very gentle and well behaved. I'm just not sure if she is a calm enough dog to be around the residents of the home.

The director of the home didn't seem to be alarmed, she said she has been watching us as we run daily and she notices how well CoCo responds to my commands. She asked about her breeding and her health records  and as we were talking one of the residens in a wheelchair came up to us and commented on CoCo and what a cute "rat" I had. CoCo approached the wheelchair very cautious like she has been taught to (my father is in a wheelchair and is disabled and CoC has been taught how o act around him.) and was great with this particular resident, but I'm just worried that she won't be what they need, or that I do not have the experience in training to bring her around that many elderly people and have her behave well.

I think that you have mentioned that Bailey is a therapy dog and I would like your advice and imput if you would be willing to give it. I have the application papers and I have gotten her records faxed to me, but I want to be as prepared and well-informed as I can be before I agree to do this. I would love to help but I want to make sure that I go about it in a way that is healthy for both CoCo and I as well as the people we wuld be visiting.

OH how cool, Maggie! I visited Nora's mom in her nursing home back in September and it was a great experience. I don't have the answers for you but Nora is sure to respond later. Way to go Coco!!

Thanks Shannon. I would really like to do this with CoCo, I just want to have all of the right information before I agree. I do have some faith in her because she has dealt with my father in a wheelchair and has been great with him. I know Nora is great with this kind of thing, amd I would like her imput.

Hi Maggie... and THANK you for considering to allow Maggie to do such a worthwhile thing! I think of all the things I've been involved in... taking my dogs to the nursing home has indeed been the most rewarding..

Bailey is NOT a certified therapy dog. He has his CGC certification (canine good citizen)... and he's very well behaved, so because my mom is a patient at the nursing home we visit... and she's been there so long (almost 4 years)... we are pretty well known there, and Bailey is more well known than I am! LOL

I had thought about putting him through the Delta therapy dog program, but I'm knee deep into agility training with Bailey and I simply don't have time. Plus... what would we do that we aren't already doing??? So, the nursing home has his vet records (required by the state). If you have the permission of the director for the retirement home... go ahead and take Maggie and ask the recreation director to go with you as you introduce Maggie to a patient or two to see how she does. It very well may be that if her behavior is acceptable and she relates well to the patients... you may not have to go through the program.

However, if it is your intent to take Maggie to multiple facilities... she needs to have her therapy certification. If I decide to take Bailey to nursing homes other than the one my mom is in (I'm there 3 days a week)... then I'll have to get him certified. But right now we're good for what we do. I don't have the time nor the energy to go to other facilities. I train two nights a week with Bailey and am at the nursing home two nights a week and usually on Saturdays. There's not enough of me to go around! LOL

Good luck to you, and God bless you for considering this !

I really think I will take CoCo to do this. We run past there everyday, so stopping by would be very good for everyone I think. I trust CoCo completely and the more I thought about it, the more I would like to do it. CoCo has been great with my dad and was wnderful with the one resident she met this morning. I think she knows she is supposed to be docile around the elderly. I have always been around nursing homes and visited people in them, so I know she will make the residents happy. Is there anything training wise I should coach her in before we start making this part of her routine? She will only be going to the one home, and I"ve got all the paperwork ready to turn in, and the director did not mention having a certification, even though I would like to look into it.

What exactly do I have to go through with CoCo to get her CGC certification?

Thank you Nora, CoCo and I appreciate your advice, you really make me have more confidence with doing this with her.
-Maggie

Bailey has had a year and a half of pretty solid training... but is still very energetic. But you know what? When he goes into the nursing home his disposition changes. I swear he knows he needs to be calm there.

CoCo is all energy, but when she is near my dad (he is disabled and in a wheelchair) she does change dispositions. CoCo is only eight months old and she has been through beginner and intermediate education training programs and starts with advanced training in two weeks. There are still a few things I would like to train her further on and I've started reading the "Other end of the leash" but overall I trust her enough to do this. I think this will be good for us both.

"The Other End of the Leash" is a wonderful book, and will serve as a good resource. Patricia McDermott has written several other good books also... they were "required reading" for the canine behavior course I took. Glad you got it !
