Linus is a 3 year old rat terrier and has previously been crate trained.  I've had him for four days now and he will not sleep the whole night.  He is in the crate during the day for two four hour stretches or one eight hour strech depending on whats going on at work.  At night he wakes up and walks around the room or does this thing with his mouth that sounds like a kid smacking and I can't sleep.  I know he is not going to sleep for days straight.  But if I go to sleep at 12 and he's up at 4:30 I've got to do something.  Any suggestions on how to get him to sleep longer?  At least till 7 would be ideal.

Have you tried taking him potty when he gets up? Vino wakes in the middle of the night like that also and I take him out to potty. After that he will come right back in a crash. If that doesn't work, I bet he will get your routine down in a few more days. It took Mocha a while after we rescued her to get into a routine...I would say at least two weeks...and even longer to get used to my hubby.

There is nothing better than wine and chocolate!

Exercise helps. Ever since I've had Niko, he's only woken me up 3 times...literally. I recommended takin' your rattie out to pee when the walking around the room.

I've let him out to see if that was the problem, but all he wanted to do was smell the whole yard and no potty. I noticed last night that he crashed on the floor at about 9 pm. I'm guessing that has something to do with it. It almost seems like the more he's exercised the more he wants to wake up in the middle of the night and do it again.

Excercise excercise!  Do you take walks in the evenings when you get home?  Play with toys etc?  It may all just be due to the little stimulation he has during the day in the crate, and so he wakes at night.  I know when I don't do much for a few days I start having trouble sleeping at night too.   My boys both sleep in my bed so I have to drag them up in the morning

Shadow sleeps all night... he is crated during the day when I am at work... but when my daughter comes home from school, she walks him. When I get home from work we play, then I walk him (9:30 - 10:00pm). We play tug of war with his rope toy, then he gets under the covers and is out for the night... I established a routine and he looks forward to it and he sleeps all night. Now he is also accustomed to my alarm clock going off at a certain time too... and sometimes he wakes up right before it does and stands over me...My daughter is the lucky one that does the early morning walks cause I absolutely hate mornings.

Hmmmmmmmm... my dogs all sleep through the night. I would advise exercise. Sounds like he's not expending enough energy between the time you get home and the time you go to bed.
